USB thinggy

Post by Merlin »

Catchy title huh....In my device manager there is an Unknown device listed in the USB lineup. It doesnt seem to affect anything except to drive me nuts. It has been there for a long time and I have no clue what it is. I tried un-installing its drivers and the device itself ( whatever it is) but the properties box says it has no drivers yet under the drivers tab there is a driver listed. I tried removing the device and restarting my PC but it always comes back like a bad headache. All of the devices I have attached to my PC via USB cable are working fine at least they appear to be. Anyone know how to find out what this " USB Thinggy" is??

Ok so based on your question I shut down my system and disconnected all the peripherals leaving only my wireless keyboard and mouse as USB devices. The "thinggy" was gone so I added back the peripherals one at a time checking the device manager after each one until they were all added back. I then reset the PC and the thingy is still gone. ??? Still don't know what it was but it seems to be gone.......FOR NOW. Thanks Dan

Do you have a digital camera that gets connected via a docking station to USB into the computer?

If so, that may give you a USB thingy in the Device Manager when the camera isn't connected. My Fuju FinePix f700 does this. When I turn the docking station button one, the yellow "?" goes away.

Glad to know that the USB thingy yellow "?" has gone away for you.

It didn't have the yellow ? There was just an entry in among all the USB devices that was titled "unknown device" the unknown device is what I lovingly call the USB thinggy. I do have a Kodak easy share dock attached so my little thinggy may come back the next time I download pictures.

Just because I missed him sooo much...my little USB thinggy is back. I tried docking my camera on the dock to see IF the unknown device was the "shadow" of the camera that was not there but it wasn't. Like I said everything works so I should just leave well enough alone but it drives me nuts to not know what it is. It could be the card reader that is part of my printer. I test that next I guess.

I have a card reader on my Brother 7-in-1... it does that.
