Computer hosed - help needed

Ok well the restarting and error problems of before have now made the computer unusable. I tried repairing windows, reinstalling windows, upgrading windows, and even installing linux and I constantly lose network connection and the computer either freezes or reboots.

I swapped memory but that did not help, so at least the memory is good.

I do not have another power supply, motherboard, nor pci-e video card to try.

I also disconnected the extra 2 SATA drives to make sure the gigabyte raid controller wasnt causing it, and i also turned it off in BIOS.

I am almost thinking the MB is going to parts heaven..??

ANY help would be appreciated!

Talk about BAD timing, with the kitchen remodel almost totally complete I doubt I can replace a whole computer right now I will have to rely on one of these older ones ( on the laptop now ).

update

Turned off the network in BIOS and attatched a USB wireless Linksys card, and I havent had any errors yet!!!

Only problem is the wireless is a LOT slower than a direct line, and the network controller is built on the motherboard, so I am guessing the motherboard might be hosed?

Do you get any messages in eventviewer? goto start / run & Type eventvwr.msc and press enter.

Have you tried to reset / update the bios?
It's a slim chance, but it could be a faulty ethernet cable, did you unplug it when you disabled to LAN? (I've seen this a few times before when I was in support)

what about temperatures? Does it crash when its on heavy load?
Some motherboards are also very sensitive to the chipset temp.
Except the tools to check cpu,northbridge (speedfan in example) you can check if the southbridge is hot with your hand.
In example my motherboard can go nuts if the northbridge (chipset) goes over 52-53 degrees (not hard in the summer).
Also inspect the motherboard for any leaking capasitors (the top usually is curved or looks like it has dirt on top)
I could be lots of things...

Also, try loading the Failsafe defaults from withing the BIOS. It should be on the right column, and since you are there check the temp reading of the CPU that the bios gives. After loading the failsafe and rebooting see what happens.

I had systems crashing and not coming back on without complete disconnect and sometimes would come back up with no network connectivity. At first i thought the onboard LAN was going wonky , then that the MoBo was. It turned out to be the Power supply (Antec) and have had no problems with any of said systems since sticking in some corsair 450's.

caps are solid ( gigabyte ds3 board ) so they wont leak.

reset BIOS - no help

removed network cable - still off, no help.

temps on the cpu are 20C and 27C right now - north and southbridges I do not know the temps.

eventviewer has THOUSANDS ( tens of thousands actually ) of things in it anything in particular I should be looking for?

yep did a bios update even though I have the latest, no help.


I really cant see a driver causing all these problems, and I cant see the P/S doing it either so I am back to the MB. I have the Intel C2D E6600 in here now, not even overclocked anymore stress tested the memory in a prevous thread and it was fine also.

Is there a way to stress the north or south chipsets to see if they give out? Maybe it was running too hot when I had it overclocked and killed it? Never really monitored the chipset and my cpu fan/heatsink is too big to allow a fan on the chipset...does have a heatsink on it though.

WOW - maybe I should rethink about the P/S then!!

never thought it would do all this...wish I had one laying around to test it on.

Is there a way to take an old ATX power supply and make it into the newer supplies with the longer mb connector and the extra 4 pin plug?

i dont think you can turn it into a 24 pin, but i have run 20 pin connectors plugged into a 24 pin connection on the MoBo

Can you post a screenshot of event viewer? (The Application and System pages) Just the top ones.

Have you tried a different PCIe slot?

Event viewer having errors doesn't nercessarily mean there's a prob either ;)

There's nothing wrong with the event viewer logs (apart from the fact it's Vista! --> all those search errors!)

When you said it crashes in Linux as well, did you get any errors or kernel panics? Linux is great logging everything
You could try running a liveCD again and see if you can replicate the problem, otherwise I'd strip it down and rebuild outside the case with minimal parts.
If you get an error in Linux, type:

tail -f /var/log/messages

for any system messages (which nearly always includes error messages from hardware -> debug stuff)

tail -f /var/log/kern.log

for only the kernel logs

Linux just froze up and did not respond - forgot the special key thing to do to start it again - the sysreq key combo thing or whatever it is so I had to hit the reset button on the computer.

I have no clue how to do basically ANYTHING in Linux so I couldnt even begin to check logs

Dunno if the board is under warranty or not, will have to check - might be since it is within a year.

Logs look fine? WOW - IE crashes about every 5 minutes or even more often and has to be restarted! Since i unhooked the regular netowrk the computer has not rebooted much at all by itself. FAH will no longer run, but that be cause i removed the login password so the computer would just login by itself.

That sure doesn't look normal to me, in the last 7 days I've had 11 errors on my Vista install, with uptime at a bit over 9 days currently.

Linux isn't too hard, it just seems that way. Infact it's designed to be prity easy to use but the only problem is, we're brainwashed by M$.
I noticed your other thread about installing ubuntu inside windows, I presume this is what you have now? If so, getting error messages/logs from linux wouldn't help much. A liveCD would be the way to go. All you need to do is open "terminal" via the program menu and type the first command in my previous post. It will output just the "tail"-end of the "message" log. This will tell you which component crashed frist.

Do you have a multimeter to test the PSU? Once you've eliminated that, it must be the motherboard.

Linux isnt run from inside of windows, you have to reboot to use it. It just installs it into a directory rather than repartitioning the hard drive. Nice program - you should give it a whirl from a windows machine sometime!!

I bought a multimeter the other day, i had no clue how to use it, but Real Men don't use instruction manuals..... They take it to some one who knows how to use it!
