AMD 64 X2 4200 Toledo Review my overclock please?

Post by Tribalpinoy »

I've previously and successfully over clocked an AMD 3200+ Venice core and haven't done anything close to over clocking since then. Now I recently purchased an AMD 64 X2 4200 Toledo and followed this guide extensively (http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/t151373.html) as well as did some research on other aspects since my motherboard won't allow me to change/lower the cpu multiplier.

Now I was wondering can I get a higher stable over clock, or do you think I'm set and good to go? Or can you perhaps correct my over clock if I did something wrong?

My current specs:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ (2 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
CPU H/S Fan: Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 80mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
Memory: 3070MB PC3200 RAM Dual Channel 2T (4 Modules) (Ocz El Platinum Rev. *2-2-2-5* 22X512/GSKILL 2X1GB *2.5-3-3-6*)
Motherboard: Foxconn's WinFast NF4UK8AA-8EKRS
Hard Drive: 203 GB SATA 1.5
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT (Will overclock soon)
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Ultimate (6.0, Build 6000)

Here is what CPU-Z shows (System is running stable Prime 95/Blend test ran 14hours straight without errors):

CPU Temp at load is 45C
System Temp at load is 34C
GPU Idle 47C

Welcome to the forums...

What is the limiting factor to your overclock? Is it the memory? The HT bus speed? The voltage options on the board? Is the PSU power rails drooping?

Every time I overclock I try and figure out these questions and if you overclock slowly you should be able to figure out what is holding you back for the most part.

seems like the timings on the memory are a little tight though they should be fine since the memory is at 190mhz out of 200 i'm guessing is the default on your ram. I couldn't see why you'd have ddr 333 in your toledo machine. what sort of temps are you getting under load? I bet you can get 2.7 on a good air cooler on that processor. toledos are great. Maybe a little voltage to 1.4v might not be bad. I'd say loosen the timings on memory to 2.5 3 3 8 those are more normal for cas 2.5 memory. See if you can't squeeze out a little bit more. to be fair though most 939 dual cores end up in the 2.6-2.8 range all said and done. You are already there.

Alright thanks for the information, actually this current overclock is previously tested as unstable as it would fail within 5 minutes of a prime 95 torture test. However after "burning in" the cpu with prime95 at a lower fsb I was able to achieve this overclock with stability testing with Sp2004 Orthos for 10 hours as well as memtest 5 passes and SuperPI 32M 2 calculations at once. I'll see if I can squeeze out a little more, but thanks for the information!

*Edit* Thanks for the information it's at 2.7ghz now stable by loosening the timings to 2.5-3-3-8, I think I can push it even furthur but I am satisfied with this speed ^^

Just out of curiosity why did you choose to get the obsolete 939 platform 90nm Toledo rather then the newer AM2 platform 65nm Brisbane? Seems like youd get a higher OC with the 65nm chip. I got 2.8ghz on my 90nm AM2 4200+ w/ DDR2 667 so im just guessing here but id imagine the 65nm chips would clock even higher plus you could upgrade to a Phenom X4 in early 08.

So why did you decide on Socket 939? Price?

Oh this is a four or so year old motherboard, it was more logical to upgrade the components and exclude the motherboard rather than to do a full brand new spanking setup judging by the price/performance ratios which the differences were minimal at best. I could push this higher, however I'm quite happy with this current speed and haven't found a way to use both cores at 100% yet...Other than obviously using Orthos.

Yep it's more than possible ^^, a Bios update should do the trick.
