Just an observation....
You want opinions but you seem like you are set in your ways and aren't taking any advise people are giving you.

To DMB2000uk:
PQI isn't a no-name brand, they've been in the US a long time. Maybe they haven't broken into the European market yet. But I would still go for the Ballistix over the PQI stuff.

Yeah, checked a couple of my fav pc shops and they don't have any PQI stuff, so must be like you said.

That is a much nicer system. The 7900GS even has a MIR that will bring its price down to $119.

If you were willing to reduce your hard drive purchases, then you could even go for something like a 7950GT which is even better for the games. Overall the 7900GS beats the 8600GTS by about 4%, and the 7950GT 512MB beats it by about 24%.

IMO, I would dump the "Deathstars" altogether and go with Seagate or WD. I'm not sure what you're looking to do, but like Dan said a TB of space? i would start with a 320gb for a system drive, then add storage at a later time if you are using it for a file server... the Nine Hundred has plenty of space for drives, and even with 3 hard drives (someone correct me if my math is off this early morning), you would have sufficient power with the Corsair 550w. This will free up a little over $100 and give you lots more room to work with your video card.

RANT ON

I am so sick of people saying DeathStar this and that. Do they even do any research? Hitachi bought IBM's HDD sector and has put out some of the best hard drives on the market. I have been using them for 5 years without problems. They have one of the lowest failure rates in the market. Hitachi is usually cheaper for the same features as Seagate. Any manufacturer can have some bad batches. I recently found and old so called DeathStar that had been working without problem for over 7yrs.

RANT OFF

Don't mean to pick on you DaIceMan, but that just irks me when people say that.

Yes X-Fi works with Vista.

Dan

I was going for 6600 because I am a faithful reader of Maximum PC, and before Intel decided to release two dual cores on a single chip, or a "quad core" (I won't be saying quad cores are here until the four cores are integrated, go AMD :P ), the 6600 was their chip of choice. Am I wrong? Sould I go with your recommendation? Please elaborate.

I am a faithful reader of Maximum PC, and until Intel released two dual cores on one die, the 6600 was their chip of choice. Please elaborate on your processor opinion.

I have no idea what Maximum PC has to do with anything. He is telling you to pick up a Core 2 Duo 6750 over a Core 2 Duo 6600. Why, because the 6750 is cheaper and faster. That seems like good reasons to me.

Yes, Creative's X-Fi drivers work fine with. Windows Update will not update the drivers; you will have to Creative's website to download them. FYI, auto updater on their website doesn't work with Vista.

Okay, I changed the processor to the 6750. I see your point, and I am sorry. I just thought that maybe there was some underlying reason that the 6750 was cheaper, maybe worse stability, or something. I also replaced the rosewill psu with an antec psu. It also cuts the rpice of the rig by about 20 bucks. Thanks to you all, especially Dan, but no less thanks to the rest of you. I am writing this from my Linux machine, o I don't have the spreadsheet. As soon as I am back on my good machine, though, I will ftp the final parts list up.

Looks sound. I see that you have your heart set on certain components

Hope you have fun (and no problems) when it comes time to building it.
