Post by fatefirst »

Guys I am looking at what I have in front of me in building my custom computer.
What do you guys think?

1. ASUS Striker Extreme $299.99
2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 $277.99
3. EVGA GeForce 8600 GT $149.99
4. Corsair XMS2 DHX $98.99
5. CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX $129.99
6. Thermaltake Soprano RS101 Black Mid-Tower $59.99
7. Seagate Barracuda $74.99
8. Philips Lite-On PLDS DVD-ROM $24.99
9. Samsung 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor $199.99
10. Logitech MX Revolution $69.99
11. Microsoft Reclusa MSRP: $69.95

Total(without shipping) = $1,457

What do you guys think?
Missing anything?
Should I wait (when would this be COMPLETE out of date?)I plan on getting all of it withing the next 4-6months?
Cheaper?
Better?
Anything I overlooked?

If you're gonna spend 300$ get a X38 board IMO

if you plan on overclocking, you'll probably want better CPU cooling. I use the Tuniq Tower 120 in my gamer and the Thermaltake Big typhoon VX. I like the Tuniq a little better.
Gamer - Thermaltake Element S | PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Black | Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L | Intel E8400 | Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro | 4GB OCZ Reaper Ram | XFX 8800GTX | Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer | Seagate 7200.10 320GB

HTPC / Folder - Palit 9600GT 1GB Sonic | AMD Phenom 9600 | Corsair DHX 4GB | ECS GF8200A | OCZ StealthXStream 500
Thanks to Palit, AMD, Corsair and ECS for sponsoring the 2008 Folding Give-away!

I like the Striker Extreme, it reminds me of my Crosshair with the same bells and whistles. That being said, the X38 is an excellent option also, and better for future proofing. 8)

You can get the PSU for $89.99 after rebate at Buy.com

If you're gonna run Vista and are concerned about future proofing, then definitely avoid the 8600GT and man up to the 8800 series. The 8600 is severely restricted by its 128bit bus. Hell...even if you run XP, you can't beat the 8800.

For $59.90 you can pick up this Corsair Ram from Zipzoomfly.

You can get a 320MB SATA Seagate or WD for about the same price at newegg.

You can get a 20"-22" LCD for about the same price...size does matter.

No matter what, I can't see spending $140 on a mouse and keyboard. I spent $20 on my combo and put the rest into more important upgrades.

In 4-6 months, much of this Can and Will change.
