While they are definitely impressive, and a very nice kit; is there really a point for uber memory like this? (Apart from bragging rights)

In terms of a real world system wide performance increase, even from going from 800Mhz to 1600Mhz, It looks to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that it is not even a 4% improvement (not memory bandwidth improvements, or synthetic benchies, but tangible performance gains).

$450 more than a good 800Mhz kit for a 4% performance increase. Hmm. I can't find a way to justify buying it.

In closing; I wish I had unlimited budgets regarding computing. I'd have a whole blade server rack in my house set to fold

Just did some quick tests on my test system... Intel E6750 @ 500MHz FSB and a 7 multiplier (3.51GHz)

I then did testing at 2000MHz and 1200MHz by doing nothing more than changing the divider... the memory was left at 8-8-8-24

1200MHz Testing
WinRAR - 1454KB/Sec
Sandra XII - 8248/8266 MB/Sec
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - 117.51867 FPS

Percentage Improvement:
WinRAR - 479KB/Sec or 33%
Sandra XII - 1585 MB/Sec or 19%
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - 3.45 FPS or 2.9%

Of course the game testing is low, but stalker is a graphics intensive game and testing was done at 1024x768 with graphics settings on high, which is what people do in real life. If you run a test like DOOM 3 at 800x600 you'll see a double digit performance increase. Not sure what you'd consider tangible performance gains, but WinRAR is something I use daily and many consider games tangible. As you noted it REALLY depends on the benchmark and what you want to gain performance in, but as always memory is getting faster and the small performance increases do add up.

That's some fast RAM at first I thought it was this set. Maybe when the price comes down it will be worth it, but right now I'm sure more people would rather pick up a DDR2 kit and hit a divider if they needed to.
