Setting up my home LAN/WLAN

Post by kenc51 »

I'm going to setup my home LAN/WLAN next week as my current setup just doesn't do it for me.

Currently I have a Linux box running as an FTP/Bittorrent/Media & File Server and using DynDNS so I can also access it from the WWW.
The Linux box is connected to my Linksys DSL Router (downstairs) via a Buffalo wireless to ethernet bridge, and this also acts as a switch for my Laptop to PC connection.
My Main rig is connected to the Linux box via Gigabit Ethernet and the Laptop using wifi or an ethernet connection to my switch.

My current problem is that my wifi link gets saturated too much, as I have the Linux box running BT and I also use this connection of my laptop to access the file server & web.

I've just ordered some parts to finally get a working LAN.
First off, I got a Linksys WRT54GL Access Point, which I can use as a switch and access point and with modded firmware, I can prioritise traffic so BT doesn't hog my throughput.
Second I went a bit overboard and got myself a NAS ZyXEL NSA-220 for nearline storage :finga:
I can then use the Linux box for archived backups and storage.

The new setup will be: Main Rig & Linux box connected to WRT54GL via ethernet, with the WRT54GL only working as an access point & router. The Buffalo bridge connected via ethernet to the WRT54GL allowing the WRT54GL to access my DSL router downstairs.
I'll also have the ZyXEL NSA-220 connected to the WRT54GL.

This way I can use the Laptop to connect via WiFi to any box or device on the lan :)

DSL Router: Linksys WAP54G
Access Point: Linksys WRT54GL
WiFi Bridge: Buffalo WLITX4G54HP
NAS: ZyXEL NSA-220 -> It's Linux based, so there might be some modded firmware soon and it also runs very quiet ;)
I prolly won't get all the parts till towards the end of the week, and since I'm heading to St Louis on Friday, I won't be setting this up till next week.
So next week, I'll not only have this network to setup, I can also test (abuse) 6GB of D9's and also see how far I can push my E6850 under water 8)

Ohh, Work also gave me one of these on Friday : dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit
But I don't know what to do with it, I am thinking of getting a Mac Mini soon for use with my TV downstairs, so this could be useful to connect back into the LAN ;)

If any of this sounds a bit complicated, don't worry, I'll posts pics which should help to explain the setup!

lol, That sounds like some serious bit of network engineering >_<

I think I followed, but pics are a must :P

How long before you wire ethernet controllers into lights and turn them off and on with your PC? :P

Dan

PS. Take lots of pics of your trip to st louis!

I'm also looking into PXE booting via the LAN, I can then setup a script on the Linux box to "rsync" backups every ~4days or so.
This setup will be more a learning experience for me, I'll get to "play" with various setups.
To this date, I have zero official qualifications (even an A+ cert), so this will allow me to study various things before taking some exams.

Don't worry, there will be pics of the LR meet. I bought a nice old bottle of (old & limited edition) whiskey to share when I get to Nate's place, so things might get messy :partyman:
So far it's confirmed I'll meet up with Nate (I'm staying in his place), Justin, Amy and Shane (bubba), and I might meet up with some other members too

Bio, will you be 'round next week? :drinkers:
