The only obvious one I can see is reinstall Linux >_<

I don't know that much about Linux, but would have hoped that the username/password would have been encrypted so using a liveCD to view your hard drive files won't help.

if you installed the alternate CD, the user is oem and the password the one you gave during the install process.

Thanks, i already took Dans advice, reinstalled and looking at it now it seems that the linux is jsut sitting on a black screen after going through the ubuntu load up screen. i will reboot and see if that helps.

****Edit*****
Just checked it then and it seems to be doing the same thing, Before when i couldn't remember the username it was able to load to the login.

I got until here
You do not need to re-install

Find your user name as aysiu described

Then, still in recovery mode, enter this command :

passwd <username>

This will set a new password

Now , reboot
but at the "passwd <username>"

it wants the original password, but going back to the install i picked the "Install OEM" while installation i had to type in two things, host name (michael) and a password (since its a public pc and you ahve to have one i used "12345678") after finding out the username using 'aysiu' instructions (the username was just 'ubuntu') then once rebooting without the live cd, i got the the login screen to try the details, neither worked.

any other ideas??

Okay, so i have booted back into live and decided i will install, again......, from there this time it seems easier because it isnt a blue screen and it asks me for the things it needs eg login details.

i will tell you how this one goes when its done [-o< [-o< [-o<
