what are you going to use it for? The VOIP i use the most is ventrillo, its free (client side) but my use is for online games.. i love it compaired to the crappy built in VOIP some games have. it would be usless to me though as far as replacing my cell phone to talk to people.

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) as in "Vonage" or "Comcast digital voice", using your high speed internet connection. I just use my cell phone. It comes down to a personal preference and what works best for your situation and budget. If you already have a high speed connection, then its something to consider. :-k

high speed connection yes, and @dan it is to replace a land line

here is the current home phone plan against the VOIP plan

http://www.iinet.net.au/products/voip/

looking at that it is currently cheaper to call international then to mobiles!

How reliable is your DSL connection?

If that goes down, you will be without a phone. Would calling in be as easy as before (as in just ringing a number to get to you).

Is it a dedicated VOIP handset (with a proper ringtone) that means you dont have to have your computer on all the time?

I jsut sent my ISP iinet an email asking them if you can keep your old home phone and what happens you are capped.
Also the phone jsut plugs straight into the router.

The states aren't so good on that front. Read the fineprint in your TOS, an unspecified amount fair usage policy allows them to cap it when they feel like it.

Thanks for your email.

In regards to your email, the extra quota you were informed about comes about when you bundle with our internet products and all really depends on your chosen plan.

When you exceed you download limit or as we refer to it as “quota” we shape or “downgrade” your connection to 64kbps.

When upgrading to VoIP we can’t unfortunately port standard numbers to you new VoIP connection.

If you have any further enquires feel free to call our friendly customer support centre on 13 22 58 or reply to this email.

Thank you

Will.

well i think that answers my questions

considering that im currently on 60gigs of quota a month, i doubt they will give me extra quota. and from how i read it you cant keep your original number

We have VoIP, and it's great. The only problem is that I have a junky router, and it likes to drop sometimes... if you get a good router, go for it!
