DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
Well, here at home i often try to set my computer to download or defrag over night and my dad is a bit of a cautious person, when it comes to computers sucking down loads of power, he is also the sort of person that has to be right so i cant say otherwise. I tried saying otherwise like xbox lives internet usage for halo 2 which is supposed to use 10mb per hour but no no, dad reckons its more. but anyways can i setup a machine that has net every day but not 24/7?

The only time that F@H uses the net is to send and receive work units, out side of that its just chunking away on the PC.

Yes, F@H only uses the net to send/receive WU's.
When F@H needs to connect to the net, I need to lower my hardware firewall prior to sending and receiving WU's. So, I have the option in F@H turned on to alert me to those times. If you turn that option on yourself, you can delay sending and receiving WU's until your machine is connected to the net.

Re: DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
not true guys. If you use SMP it needs a Internet Connection. Other clients do not

Re: DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
Well then, it seems that i might either just do that or go buy a cheap wireless card. Thanks a Bunch!

Re: DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
I'm using the Windows SMP GUI F@H. It only needs to connect to the internet when sending or receiving WU's. Other than that it runs in the background just fine while the machine isn't connected to the net.
This will also work with dial-up systems too.

SMP uses MPiexec which uses the internet, as far as I know it needs the net or it can't crunch

I've had my wireless lose the signal and I've disconnected my network cable and both cause the SMP client to shutdown immediately!
The standard client only needs internet access to send and receive WU's.

Why does the SMP client need to have call home so much?

It doesn't call homebubba wrote:Why does the SMP client need to have call home so much?
Basically it uses the internet to make sure the threads are running in synch correctly. Remove that, and the 4 threads of the SMP can't talk to each other anymore

Re: DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
Doesn't it just do all that on the loopback adaptor?

Re: DO you need net 24/7 to fold?
technically it makes sense that if you didn't have a network card available, and you setup a loopback adapter it could work. But then you'd have to have a network adapter to send the results in.
