Free Windows XP Key! hehe
Well, after looking for parts for my new laptop (yeah another one, dv1331se, let's just say it was as cheap as my alienware) for spare I found an auction on ebay.

Enlarge the first picture, use an OEM cd, enjoy! :D

Re: Free Windows XP Key! hehe
except keys like that are tied to the hardware and will not work with anything else.

Re: Free Windows XP Key! hehe
It's still pretty funny!

yup, even with the XP Pro CD keys. Its tied to the particular brand. So an HP CD key will not work on a Dell (or anything else for that matter).

Re: Free Windows XP Key! hehe
I know for Dell and HP keys its the case, I tried install the OS of the Dell box that the motherboard died in on a replacement non dell mobo and with a standard XP disk and it wouldn't let me do it. Dell and HP both use customized XP cds to only work on their hardware. Try taking a Dell or HP disk and install it on a after market system, the installer will tell you that its not the right type of hardware. I can only assume that the keys are different due to the customized install disk.skierkid450 wrote:really, because i (cough..cough..)lifted a key from an acer at school and im pretty sure it worked(i could be wrong becuase it was a while ago,but i could try again)bubba wrote:dicecca112 wrote:except keys like that are tied to the hardware and will not work with anything else.

Negative Ghost Rider
The key will work with an OEM Copy of Windows XP, in other words, there's basically a master copy of Windows XP Home SP2 that you can install any OEM key, you CANNOT activate it via windows / internet most times, the way you do it is call.
They ask you...
1) Where did you buy it or was it preinstalled? BOUGHT, best buy
2) On how many copies is this software installed? 1, this computer only
3) What is the reason for this activation? I changed my motherboard out
4) Ok sir I now have your 42 digit confirmation number, please enter them in box a through f, three at a time.
Can you tell I've done it a LOT?
This is the way the Geek Squad, Fire Dog, etc all do their vanilla versions of Windows XP and use your OEM COA.
If anyone is interested in this copy of XP I can upload the iso that I use, but honestly I think it was just an HP XP cd, there's also a dell copy that's tied to the hw where you dont even have to activate but you can still use the HP cd, you just have to call it in.
Anyway, little information...also, you have to use the OEM Copy of XP, a standard windows xp home cd won't even take the CD Key, it has to be OEM to OEM or Retail to Retail.

Re: Free Windows XP Key! hehe
I used the Windows Media Center cds off my dell laptop and installed Media Center on my new desktop as a temporary OS, and was able to activate online just fine using the key off the bottom of my dell laptop.
