Should I get a PSP?

Post by vicaphit »

I have been thinking about getting some sort of video/music player recently. I thought about the Zune, then decided $250 was a bit steep... I then looked at the PSP, because I like gaming, this sounds like a logical choice. It plays video, music, games, browses the internet, and has a picture viewer. the only downside is the data storage. The biggest pro duo card I know of is the 4 gig, and I think if I load that with videos and music I wont have much room for a lot of both.

My question is this: does anyone have a PSP who can give me a thumbs up? I know there is a new version coming in september, so I know I will atleast wait until then. If anyone has any bad experiences, please share them!

yea the storage isnt the greatest...i have a 2 gig card in mine...and ihave about 150 mp3's bout all 8 of my game's saved..about 100 pictures...and some downloaded video..bout 10 vids..and i still have 570 megs left...not bad..considering i didnt think i would need a huge amount of mp3's on it(they are also in 192kbps to about 320kbps bit rate..lower rates will take up less space of course)...the movies are disappointing mainly cuz those things are the same price as regular dvd's which also means not many more companies are makin movies for it anymore..game wise..its great..other than the movie thing and the storage...its a thumbs up for sure...pizza hut didnt like the web browser on it tho when i tried to do an online order with it.. (last time i checked) lol...will turn alot of heads who are technologically impaired...

My mate bought one with a similar intention, but after a while he got bored of all the games and the thing was too big to just be a music player (especially with the small capacity). Plus the battery life isn't particularly great compared to other players. It does have a very pretty screen for movies, but in reality how often would you be watching them?

In the end he got a Creative zen something or other, he's been much happier with that.

i love my psp, i got mine the week they first came out. ALTHOUGH, i'm sure that if you wanted just a media player with a larger capacity, your money would be better spent on another gadget.

i love the games, storage, and customization, but i doubt you'd be into the form factor and limited space. check out dicecca112's thread on "beaker needs a new mp3 player" as there are some great choices on it.

like i said, i absolutely love my psp, and i cant wait for psp2 which will have 8Gb of flash memory built in, BUT i'd say check your options (what other media player lets you play games though :P)

I like the games idea though. Atleast I would have something to do when visiting the Girlfriend while she is in classes. I love the browser idea too.

Well, I guess I will just wait for the PSP slim to come out in 2 months. I hate to make up my mind about buying something then having to wait. If I find it at a good price now I might just go out and buy one though!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I will get one!

I got a little ahead of myself and bought one over the weekend. I got it at FYE for $139 after rebates, got a 2 gig flash drive from radioshack for $39, and a carrying case from babbages... I was all over that mall!

Im happy with it, but I need to figure out how to get my videos onto it. I havent gotten a ton of time to play around with it yet, but I cant wait to utilize all of the features.

The browser is cool, when I can find a wireless signal. I even gmailed from it, and it wasnt too bad to type out a short email.

If it is FW 3.51 and below you can install a custom FW so you can also play homebrew and emulators on it!
it gives a whole new life to the psp :)
you can go the maxconsoles forums for more infos if you are interested..

Nice... now sell it. the new "PSP Lite" is coming out sometime this year, and if you wait too long (right before the new model comes out, you might be able to sell it for 100 buck, just bring it back to FYE and get a refund, and wait a couple of months for the "lite" to come out. And if ur really bored.... just get a DS.

I like my PSP, but as a music player, it's just too big to be practical while exercising (which is where I would primarily use the music feature). Movies are great, but I must admit my eyes get tired after watching on the smaller screen :? UMD format sucks, but it's all we've got. UMD prices have plummetted all over, but I'd still rather have the movie/video on DVD format to watch on the big screen. In the end, I use my PSP as a gaming machine, and I'm ok with that :supz:

I am pretty pleased with mine. No chance of me selling this one to get the lite... This one is already too thin for my hands, and playing for more than 30 minutes is too much for me, which is perfect.

I use it as an MP3 player for my car, just plug it into the aux port on the stereo and youve got a shuffling 2 gigs of music!

Im going to figure out how to rip my DVDs onto it eventually so I can use the movies I have already purchased instead of buying new movies in a different format.

One of my favorite functions is the wifi internet. I can check my gmail at work in our cafeteria since they block web based mail on our work computers, and I can download tons of demos.

do not get a psp..one of the biggest mistakes i've done in my life is buy a psp....after about 1month you'll get bored of it ..well i did after 3 weeks..and i wasted so much money on it..games&memstick then haxing it which was fun but then i found it boring not a wide variety of games..if i iddnt waste my money on a psp i would hav finished builing my comp..if u were to get a psp i would recommend u to use the same amount of money and buy a nintendo ds & a ipod nano for the same price.

I bought it a while ago, and am pleased with it.

I didnt buy a ton of extras for it, so I didnt pay an arm and a leg. I use it mainly as an MP3 player, and web browser while at work (to check email)

hahahaha my incident involved some beer as well! i was hanging out with a friend, playing music on the PSP, and as i went to grab another Heineken, the darn thing dropped down off the table onto the hardwood floor. yes yes it was in the Logitech protector case, but something about how it made contact frazzled my wifi... *sigh*
i bought mine when they first came out for $275 as a package deal, now that they're $160 i may just end up buying a new one, keeping the old one for homebrewing :)

I have officially sold my PSP due to lack of playtime. Since I have all of my PC games to keep me busy, and I no longer need an MP3 player, I have sold it to my friend at work.

I invested about $300 into it, and I'm getting $200 back. $100 for 6 months of use isn't too bad I guess.

I'm not going to say I told you so :P

Did you get many games on it? I guess if you had some decent playtime before everything dried up it would be worth it.
