Hello everybody, i have two routers, about 300 ft away from each other and two floors apart, i have a 14db corner hawking antenna connected to one router, and i want to configure both routhers to be on the same network, any idea on how to do this? And i have not had internet set up yet. So i want a home network currently that both routers are on.
the routers that i want to connect together are wireless
two routers on same network
Re: two routers on same network
One of those routers needs to be configured as an access point, with a static, local IP. DHCP might work, but static would be better IMO.
If it doesn't have that capability in it's software, you'll need to replace it with one that does.
The other one will need to be hooked to your Internet modem and IT will be the only REAL router on the network.

Re: two routers on same network
how should i configure the 192.168.?.? address to get the two routers connected together?
so far i think that i will need to have both routers using same wep key and same ssid
what else would i need?

Re: two routers on same network
What kind of routers are they?
Does either one have the ability to be configured as an access point?

Re: two routers on same network
You should also look to see if they support "WDS"
If they do, get the MAC address of the router connected directly to your DSL/Cable.
Then on the second router, set it up with the same wireless SSID, wireless channel, encryption type (WPA2 is best), password and IP address range. Then enter the MAC address of the first router into the WDS page and save the settings.
You might also have to enter the MAC address of the second router into the WDS settings page of the first router too.
I've never tried this, as I've my WLAN setup differently, but I've hear it's easy to do.
This way you'll have just one big wireless network.

Re: two routers on same network
well one of the router is netgear wgt624 and the other one is a trend net tew-452brp. well i wanted to have a home network.
the set up i believe is kind of simple. I want to share an internet connection for my family. We have rooms that are at the same side but on the opposite ends of the building
i have counted that the distance was about 250 feet. I also bought a sling box. the sling box, which uses either home lan or internet, to send tv signals to a computer. I wanted to set up so that the sling box is in one of the condo and on the other one, will be receiving on a lan. so i have the trendnet set up with the slingbox, the sling box is connected into a lan port on the trendnet. I have a laptop with wireless card. I tried to see if i could connect to the lan. No signal. So i bought a hawking 14db hi gain corner antenna and attached it to the trendnet routher that has the sling box connected to it. After it was connected, i tried to connect again. But There is only one place that the signal is recieved. If the laptop is moved one inch, the signal is not there any more. The signal is also not strong enough to stream constantly the av from the trendnet.
So I thought that if i added another router, this is just one lying around, to the 2nd condo, the signal might get stronger. But i do not know how to configure them together.
The netgear (2nd) router is not necessary even. I just want to make the signal strong enough.
So i thought of something else. I have a wireless card that you put into the computer, the ones where you place into the tower computer itself. The antenna is removable so i was thinking of attaching a 7db hi gain omni directional to it. Would the tower computer be able to pick up the signal, because the laptop was able to but kind of failed. Since the card does not have an attachable antenna, would it help if i use the tower and set up the antenna, would i get a signal that would be strong enough? I also just had internet connected and this connection is in the 2nd condo, just moved in, so trying to get av from original condo to the 2nd one. But 2nd condo has internet connection and a 2wire gateway that i want to share the internet connection with the original condo. Anyone have any ideas? I need to signal to be strong to stream the av.
Still another idea that i thought of is that using the trendnet router as an AP and send the av signals onver internet and use computer internet in new condo to recieve it. but old condo does not have internet connection. There are some free open wifi singals though. So i was thinking of using router to connect to wifi signal to send the av signals across internet and recieve it on the other condo, its the same building. But i do not know how to connect, or if its even possible, to configure the router to send av signal into internet without a internet connection connected into a wan or lan port. The old condo does not have a computer either, its an emachine that last only 3 yrs like so many other people's emachines, think psu busted
So is there anyway to get the signal over to the new condo which is like 250 feet away, Both condos are in the same side of the building just far apart. They are also two stories apart, but the condo building is only 11 floors high so we are not that high up. So I wanted to share av signal from old condo over to new condo and the internet connection from new condo to be able to use in the old condo. any antenna configuration suggestions?
I also do not know which is the best way to go currently. The tower computer does not have a svideo, but the laptop computer does. so if the tower computer is able to get the signal, is it possible to get the signal over to laptop so it can send the av signal into tv though a svideo connection?
Any suggestion is greatly needed

Re: two routers on same network
Wow, that sounds like quite a networking challenge.
For you to be able to create a wifi network that far you'd have to boost the signal some more(like you did with getting the bigger gain antenna). I'm tempted to suggest trying to set up something like a cantenna or wokfi, though these would need some degree of DIY skill to make. You can find instructions on how to make a cantenna here (or cheat and buy two from here) and easier to make wokfi ideas/instructions can be found here.
Another possibility is that something like a homeplug network extender would work, though 250ft apart would translate into more length than that in electrical wiring, am I to understand correctly that the apartments are on different floors too? If they are, it might be too far apart for them to work (though I would be intrigued to know if it could or not).
So I'm left back thinking of the directional wifi antenna's (wokfi and cantenna). Is there a line of sight between the two apartments when someone sticks their head out of both windows? (Assuming there are windows to do that with). Placing a directional antenna on either side pointed at each other would work a treat if that is the case. Else if this isn't practical, you could just point the directional antenna's roughly at each other within the building and hope for the best. If you don't want to try this route, the high gain desktop antenna might work as well.
Unless you have good internet upload speeds in the place with the slingbox, the quality of sent files, or the buffering time would hinder AV sending by using the internet alone.

Re: two routers on same network
well there is a straight line of sight of two people look out the windows, they also have a place where you can walk out, lol sorry i dont know what they are called but its a place where apartment buldings have sliding door and you can walk out and there is like 10-20sq ft of room outside to place bbq, dish, etc
Re: two routers on same network
That would be called a balcony.
Thinking about it, with your current set up, one wokfi dish might be enough to boost the received signal in the condo with no access, so if you want to, try it out with a USB wifi stick (on a usb extention cable) and seive/wok combo pointing at where your router should be, to see how much it improves your connection.
For the best possible results, having two 'dishes' secured on the balconies pointed at each other would give you the strongest signal, but I'm not sure how you'd connect a wokfi to the router. The cantennas would work with the router, but you would lose the ability to connect to the wifi in that condo, as the cantenna would make the wifi signal unidirectional (in the direction the cantenna points) instead of the usual omnidirectional. So maybe if you decide to go with the cantennas then you could use the second router (in AP mode) for the cantenna, and then have that AP plugged in via lan to the first router with the slignbox and internet.
So you have a few options, but they require some tinkering and creativity. Which one sounds best to you?
Hope i've been clear and havent just confused you lots!

Re: two routers on same network
well i think i am on the same page as you. I have read about a wok fi antenna and cantenna in the last few days doing research. The problem is that, when the wok is attached to the usb, how is it connected to the computer? And the laptop that i have does not have a 2.0 usb port. It does have a network card that you slide into the side but it does not have an antenna sticking out. I do have 3 other computers but they are quite old. One is an hp me edition. I was thinking of attaching a wireless adaptor into the computer and replace the antenna to a hi gain one. But if the me computer did connect to the slingbox, would i be able to get the av signal on my laptop because the laptop is the only computer that has an video output.
What can i do for a wok fi? I have just ordered att internet and they sent me some wireless adaptor that looks something like a usb adaptor plus it has a base to plug the actual usb connection into and on another end is a longer cable that has a usb plug to put into computer, would it work if i placed a wok on that usb adaptor and connect that to the ME computer?
I was also planning on upgrading the Me computer to an XP.
