8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
i currently have a 8800gts 640mb its a kick ass card dont get me wrong.. but i have been reading some reviews online and it seems as though the 8800gt 512mb is benchmarking alot higher than the 8800gts- except for a few games at the highest resolutions.. why would someone pay $350 for a card when the "new" card is better and cost $100 less? Is it time to try and sell the GTS and grab a GT? What do you guys think? also will having a 22in widescreen monitor give any advantage to the GTS?

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
I wouldn't bother selling. Just stick with it, it's not like if the GTS 640 was a bad card.
Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
its a great card. i was just thinking if it didnt cost me anything why not upgrade. I am surprised more people havent offered some opinion- this is a review website correct?

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
A GTS refresh is coming, that's why the GT is currently better than the GTS. Also, DAAMIT is releasing a whole new platform this month... not exactly the best time to upgrade anything.
Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
I dont call it an upgrade at all. If you want to save some power, then switch, but the reviews I have seen still show the 640mb at or above the 8800gt.
It is one of those super-small difference swaps that really doesnt make any sense to do, unless like i said you need a less power hungry card.

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
really? i have seen about 4 or 5 review sites benchmarking and the 8800GT has better FPS in most all games benchmarked... I am aware of the overhaul to the 8800gts but that doesnt really do me any good. also the 8800GT has the new Purevideo feature, none of the other 8800's have that. I have my current card up on craigslist for sale and if i can get at least $320 for it i will sell it. before it becomes worth even less after the overhaul...

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
I did a similar thing a while back, as I sold my 7900GS to my brother and managed to get a 7950GT for a little bit more than what I sold the 7900GS for.
If you can get more than the price of the 8800GT for your GTS then its a good thing to go for, even if the performance isn't that majorly different.

if i can get $300 or more i will sell it.. so far a couple tire kickers, I am just feeling very cheated right now buy nVidia- i think they should offer some type of upgrade program for any one who has the old GTS. $50 swap out you old card and get a new overhauled version.

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
Instead of playing the victim, just be happy that you have a kickass card. Most people can't even afford an 8xxx series card right now. I would love to have an 8800GTS 640, so I can't even begin to relate.

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
well that kinda my point- i saved for 9+ months to build my new computer and save up to my $1000 budget. then two months after i drop $360(after rebate) of it on my card- a card that is benchmarking better is released for $100 less. Yeah so sorry if i feel cheated - i wouldnt say i am a "victim" per say but it just doesnt feel right. I dont have unlimited resorces and had to save for a long time. i think its a pretty realistic emotion to feel cheated by nVidia. It would be no different saving up for a brand new car and paying $30,000 for it, just to have the same car come out the next year with- 200 more horse power and costing $20000.

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
It happens all the time, especially in this industry. What you buy today, will most certainly be obsolete tomorrow.
I've had my 7900gs for some time now, and it wasn't the top of the line card when I purchased it. I refuse to get tangled up in that game because I know that I will end up feeling like you do.
The 8800GT won't be on the top of the pile for very long so cheer up. In fact, when it does get surpassed, that is really the time to buy one because they will be in the $120 - $159 range.
Like KnightRid said, I have also seen reviews of the 8800GTS 640 being at or above the level of the 8800GT.
Good luck, I hope you find what you seek.

i hear ya... but usally its the next best thing being more expensive and what you paid $400 for is now worth $200 after a year, not the other way around.. lol -

Re: 8800gts 640mb vs 8800gt 512mb
It got the 640MB GTS and could have waited a week or so and got the 512MB GT, but I don't care!
There's no real difference between the two, except the cost!
I wouldn't change it for a GT now, unless you can sell the GTS for a good price!

not at the moment- but my computer is directly under(lower lever) my 55" HDTV and It would be entirely possible to start using it for movies - i think i am just going to wait and see what the revamp of the 8800gts looks like
