Well, if I need better performance to play the latest games, I will just OC my X2 3800+. At the moment, its OK since I have Vista and DX10.
To compare the CPU usage of DX9 and DX10 playing CoD4.....
at 1024x900 91fps and 18-21% CPU usage with DX10
at 1024x900 84fps and 80-90% CPU usage with DX9
This was done using an
ATI Radeon X1650PRO PCI-e16 Graphics Card
Socket 939 Athlon64 X2 3800+ @ 2.0Ghz
2048MB (4x512mb Dual Channel) DDR-400 K-Byte RAM
ASUS A8V-XE Mainboard
The OS's used were-
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows XP Home
In my tests I find that DX10 is alot more efficient with gaming. From what I have read, it offloads alot of the graphics calculations to the GPU.
So, all in all... an X2 3800+ should handle games to come for the next 3-5 years with the proper OC' Potential.

You managed to run DX10 on a DX9 card?
