XP sp2 dvd-r reading problem

Post by dkarko »

Well this is silly, but there seems to be some problem with XP sp2 after trying to read a "bad disk"

For some reason the drive will see dvd-rs now as 0byte cd (dvd+r works fine)! I researched a bit and its happening to lots of people no matter what drive they use.
Even ISObuster seems to be able to read dvd-r, so its just the xp driver or something.
Also, dvd-rs can be read in XP safe mode and other OSes (i tried Linux and othrs say it worked for them on Vista,dos,98)
The drive is not falling back to PIO, i checked and cleared the appropriate counters to be sure.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the dvd from the device manager several times + reboot, but no luck!

Any ideas? :?
Maybe a clue on how to make a clean uninstall of the dvd driver? (i mean delete it completely and let the system ask for it,but on the safe side)

files shown on the driver file details of the drive:
cdrom.sys
imapi.sys
pxhelp20.sys
redbook.sys
storprop.dll

The drive is a nec nd4551A

Thanks!

You can try the dvd drive on another computer
or
Try the dvd drive on another OS
or
Download a linux live cd

try to load the dvd's from there. If they dont work anywhere then chances are your dvds are toast or that the drive has a problem. If other OSes/installations/computers with the same drive can run them then possibly you have the same problem with me and some other people

I don't see how i can repair my installation though, and i can't find any answer either. At least everywhere i looked where this problem is posted by users there is no solution given and its not a new problem. I would hate to format

Its weird. I used the same disk to install windows on all 4 computers in this house. All their own legit keys and stuff. Just my disk that has no extras on it. And all have dvd players 2 have burners. NONE play dvd-r all play dvd+r... I think my disks are bad. I lost ALL My DATA!!! All my stuff I backed up on DVDs to reformat my harddrive into 1 partition. All 4.1gigs of pics. and 60 music and movies that I saw once so I don't care. But, still my pics are the ones I care about.. ALL GONE

Oh man i'm sorry :(
I wouldnt care that much about music too. But pictures and personal files, that is harsh :(.
I have lost some too because of a power failure when i was resizing a partition...

Don't give up mate, try in another OS like a linux live cd
Take the disks to a friend etc

Next i have noticed that people with my problem said that ISObuster (i dont know that program) was able to read the dvd-rs even though xp failed! You may want to try that too!

Last, you might be able to retrieve the pictures from the disk with a data recovery program (but i dont know much of that either, but i'm sure you will find alot of help from other members about data recovery!)

Try everything, there is a chance mate.
