AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
AMD closed the day on the stock market with a market cap of 4.68 Billion dollars... Their stock closed at $8.43 and hit a low of $8.42 which is a 52 week low and the lowest they have been since 2003. I'm amazed how AMD/ATI is now worth less on paper than the 5.4 billion dollars that they paid for ATI just last year.

The thing is, the part that is doing well from my perspective is the ati branch. the graphics cards are almost staying on pace. just not competing for the epenis market, just the average gamer market. I feel they are doing well. It's the processors not being able to compete with intel that's losing them all the money I feel.

I Still cant believe Hector Ruiz got a raise. Oh well If they keep this up then it wont matter because AMD wont be able to pay his raise in the first place.
Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
That would mean their an under valued stock, I wonder what Hector has on his desk?

Why do you think it is under valued?Methious wrote:That would mean their an under valued stock, I wonder what Hector has on his desk?
Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
Second hand word from a professor at MSSU, was setting up some AV presentation stuff for a computer class where they give 2 hour speeches on new developments in the computer area, he was lecturing economics/accounting not sure which. Apparently Hector and the AMD buyout of ATI is a business model their studying. Pre-acquisition value of AMD plus acquisition value of ATI, combined with post acquisition negative image as perceived by the economic community leads to devaluation of their stock. According to what I was hearing (while trying to stay productive) if they work out their R+D on true native QUAD core yield problems, or back step and shove 2 dual cores on one die combined with a reversal of market image their stock could rebound. Lot of "if" statements in there for me. They talked some about tri-core development, and were debating if the third core was going to act as a controller/distribution chip for the other two cores to improve inner core efficiency , or was just another shot at price point placement. They also talked about being in a position where leveraged buy out by a third party was becoming more likely.
Economics was never my strong suit, so in the 40 minute period I was behind the stage curtain trying not to make noise, what I heard could be out of context. It was also a business model University lecture. I wouldn't rush to buy a bunch of stock, if Hector pulls the company back he deserves his raise, if not he probably walk away set for life anyway. Me after all my upgrading I'm probably going to roll my system out (mobo and processor) and Intel for a while. My current AMD system is doing every thing I need it to do at speeds I find more than acceptable, but if AMD bellies up I'm sure the equipment would be devalued. So In the current rebuild I allowed for the switch to Intel with out having to dump a bunch of parts to do it. Personally I'm rooting for AMD, I don't think it's going to do any one any good to see Intels only viable alternative to die out no matter which camp a person is in.

<--would buy a chunk of AMD stock if I had the extra cash.
AMD is Intel's only real competitor in the CPU business (for now). That means that there are a lot of interested parties that would not like to the domination of one mfg over all the rest. This virtually eliminates competition. Competition is good. It drives the prices down (assuming supply meets or exceeds demand) and usually leads to innovation. After all, necessity is the mother of invention and innovation can put you on top. So, it's in the interest of "Big Business" to keep AMD in the game to help balance Intel. Of course, that's just MHO.

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
what would happen if intel bought out AMD, that would be a very scary world
i mean, if AMD was in a very bad place, and had to sell, and the only people that would buy them was intel, and they would become virtually a monopoly over processors and chipsets
; they could set the prices to whatever they wanted; they could produce new technology only if they felt like it, but with no need or motivation to do so; i wonder how many people would refuse to upgrade and force them to lower prices..
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE, BUY AMD PRODUCTS AND KEEP THEM GOING!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
Actually, according to Tom's Hardware, they're guessing that it would be NVIDIA or Samsung that would buyout AMD.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/14/ ... _buy_amd_/
NVIDIA's had great success this year since nothing from ATI can keep up with the 8800GT/GTS/GTX. Only products from ATI that can keep up with the 8800GT is most likely the 3870 imo.
Nvidia buying AMD would open up the whole monopoly issue, yet at the same time Nvidia wouldn't have to keep ATI. They could buy AMD with the published, disclosed intention to sell off ATI for parts. In such a move, Nvidia would acquire what was once a potentially very profitable chip making company, while simultaneously diminishing their current significant GPU market threat. They would also augment their abilities to create powerful chipsets, integrate CPUs directly into new CE apps, flush out AMD's plans for the CE markets, and build an overall stronger product line from A to Z. Rumors about Nvidia wanting to become more than just a GPU company surface from time to time, and if the company really wanted to go this way, this could be the best chance they will ever get to jump into the CPU arena. (Taken from Tom's)
As for Samsung, it seems that they've had an excellent year as well. They have around $5.8 billion of cash on hand. An interesting side aspect of this thought is that Samsung is already the world's second largest chip company, behind Intel. And Intel considers Samsung to be its biggest competitive threat. Samsung moving into the x86 field could bring a whole new dynamic to this market. (Taken from Tom's)

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
AMD today closed at $7.70 in after hour trading... That's a market cap of 4.26Billion...
So in four days their stock dropped 73 cents and as a result their market cap is down .42 Billion... That's what 420 million dollars in four days?
NVIDIA has a market cap of 18.96B, Intel has 151.50B and Activision just for fun is 7.78B. Heck even Micron Technology has a market cap of 5.93B...
Intel has a market value of $151.5 Billion in just outstanding shares! That's just nuts if you think about it. Actually, it's not nuts... Google has a market cap of 210.65B... Only $60 Billion more than Intel... lol
If you don't know what a market cap is it's the the total dollar market value of all of a company's outstanding shares. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying a company's shares outstanding by the current market price of one share. The investment community uses this figure to determining a company's size, as opposed to sales or total asset figures.

420M in 4 days
out of just 4,260M
thats a 10% out of total loss! so AMD decreased in market value by 10% in a mere 4 days! thats is NOT good

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
I'd buy some stock in AMD if I could. especially since it's down. I can only see rebound from here even if they get bought out. Though I've not got a lot of loose change lying around as a college student.

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
Amd should give me some stock (I'd settle for one share), as much of their equipment as I've had over the years.

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
AMD closed at another 52 week low today... $7.32
They now have a market cap of 2.96B....
Insane!
In 2 years they have gone from $40 a share to $7... Nutty
The last time AMD was around this price was back in July 2003... Back before the Athlon 64 came along. Oh well back in 1990 they were worth less than $2 and came back from that too.

Now would be a good time for some one that actually knew how to run a company to buy them out.

Down to $6.88 a share... how low can they go! Wonder if this would be a good buy if they get below $5 or $6.
Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
If I was investing, I'd buy now. It may go down more but it will recover.

Re: AMD has a market cap of $4.68 Billion Today
I'd invest if it starts to go back up, or they work out their yield problems with Phenom. I'd really like to see them push 2 dual cores on one die make it phenom compatible for the AM2+ boards, shove a butt load of cache on the chip and re-evolve the true quads from there. I think being the underdog their R+D money is tighter than Intel taking longer to work out. If they work out some kinks I'll probably hit Scotttrade, dump some Wal Mart and pick up some AMD.
