smp question?

Post by martini161 »

has this happened to any one else before? my machine will be folding away for days at a time, but one day when i go down to check on it, i see it hasnt competed any steps in a while. so i open task manager, and it says my cpu usage is at 0 or so. so i restart my pc (cause when i try to exit the clients i always get unit ending errors) is this just a bug with smp?

I would say no. Remember to run only one smp client per computer.
sometimes the server goes down, that has happened to all of us.
Just restart computer and start smp client. It should pick up where it left off.

When more than one folding @ home program is running, when one finishes the other will have a problem. I have tried it myself. When one is finished the other will have a error. Done deal. Please read the folding @ home download page. One program per computer. Good luck if you can pull it off. happy folding! :)

yeah if you want to run more than one SMP you need to run the second in a VM

no, what you described is typical behavoir.
for a quad core machine, the best ppd config is to run it under WindowXP, then run 2 instance of VMware, each with a single instance of LinuxSMP client. then set each instance of vmware to low priority, also assign the affinity the following: core0 & core1 to one vmware instance, core2 & core3 to the second vmware instance.

p.s. it's best to have 2GB of system ram and assign 512MB on each vmware instance.

how many points per day do you think id gain doing that? cause if its only about 100 or so i wont bother, as i suck with linux and vmware and this is my gaming+everyday use+folding, so it would be a hassle
edit: wait, does that mean id have 3 instances running?
