Folding Help

Post by Alathald »

I'm having some issues getting the folding client started, every time I try running it I get the same error. I'm running it on a emachines with XP installed as my computer isn't connected to the internet (and this emachines is connected through dialup >_<). It's not the fastest computer (or connection) but I figured at least I could get some experience with the client and turn in some points at least until we get high speed and I can connect my main rig. The MD5 sums are the same so it wasn't a corrupted download either. Can anyone tell me why the client isn't running? Is it because I'm on dialup? Thanks, oh and here's the error I keep getting...
And yes, I'm online when getting this message.

The first thing I see wrong is the "Ask Before Connecting" setting should be "No"
I am not sure this will fix your problem but it is a place to start.

OK, I first changed Use proxy? to no and it seemed to help a bit...allow it to connect to the Assignment Server but not the work server. I then changed Ask before fetching/sending? to no but it's still having issues...I've included my config and advanced config setting this time (forgot in first post) if that will help. I keep getting the same error over and over (different than before though, it lets me connect to the assignment server).

EDIT: I've just tried running this locally (D'oH >_<) and it seems to be going just fine, it dl'd a new core and started up Project: 891 so hopefully it works from here. It is odd that it would only run locally tho :? Thanks for letting me bug you guys (again :P)

Glad to hear you're up and running!
One setting you may want to change would be the "Use IE Settings" change that to "Yes".

Actually with IE7 that setting caused lots of errors with FAH connecting.

Since you're on dial-up, do NOT check the box to work on WU assignments over 5Mb or more. It will take a few hours to upload the WU results.

Not all places have DSL or Cable available. A co-worker of mine lives only 1 city block away from getting cable and high speed out in the country. To run the line to his home, it's only $22,000!!!

Needless to say, he's on Juno dial up.

I wasn't even given the option of paying to run Mediacom Cable to my house (less than 1/4 mile, house on the corner). They came out, looked, said they would give me a call when they had more information... that was 22 months ago. At least I have DSL... 3mb/512 so it's slow, but, i've been working on a clients machine with dialup this weekend and my slow DSL is CERTAINLY better than it.

That's pretty much my case, I live just outside BFE and the only choice for the 'net out here is dialup or satellite. I'd rather not go satellite because of the massive delay and the small cap with most plans on top of the price. Sadly enough, I live about 1/2 mi from even DSL and just don't have that big a piggy bank. Don't worry tho I'm use to being bashed for my conn. :)

On a side note, there may be a move for me in the near future, so hopefully dialup will be a thing of the past (for me). Also, the pc I'm currently running F@H on has only turned out 105000 out of 500000 steps since I got it running above so that may take awhile as well (~5 days from the looks of it) >_<

yeah... my wife's machine is a P3 1.5ghz, 1gb ram, run text only on a 3740 SimT Gromacs and it's looking like about a week on it for 343 points. Deadlines are 63 and 95 days, so a week is well within the limits, so I may as well let it run

OK, now I have a new issue when trying to start folding. I restarted the computer (nothing to do with the console, just needed to restart the system) and now that I've done that I continuely get a error when starting locally. I get the same error as above starting normally. I'm really trying to make this work but it's been giving me problems the whole way. ARRGGH! Please help! Here's the error:

Are you running it from C:\ ?

I don't think the program has rights to write to here.
You're also using the console version?

Looks like he's using the local flag, that would mean he's trying to run 2 consoles on one system, I would assume dual core or HT. If HT or dual I have a installer that prevents issues caused by the local flag

I'm on a single core machine, trying to run one instance, from C:\ , I'm using the local tag because for reason it would run with the local tag (but no more) and not without it. As far as I know all the needed files are there. I'm using the console version as I assume the graphical version would run a lot slower on this POS (not the rig in my sig). I wasn't having problems writing to C:\ but I'll try moving it out. It's a emachines bought from BestBuy (I about flipped when I found out as it's my granny's computer and it was after I told her I'd build one for her). It has 768MB of DDR and here's the CPU-Z:

OK, I think I finally got everything working! I moved the console executable to it's own folder ( C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\ ) and low and behold there was already a graphical version of F@H there (whoops). I checked my Start-Up folder to make sure it wasn't trying to run on startup (it was), uninstalled the graphical version, started over from scratch with the console version and tried running it. Ran fine, didn't even need the local flag. So I decided to get fancy and ran it as a service, rebooted, and checked services and CPU usage to be sure it is running. It is. At least I hope that's the reason that the CPU usage is at %100. Here's a pic of my FAH service running, tho I'm not really sure why there are two services, one running and one not...oh well, as long as it's going :-P
