The infamous Dell sale for the MSI 8800GT
I ordered two of those MSI 8800GT cards from Dell back on November 28th and I still haven't received them yet. They bumped my ship date for the third time now. This time setting it to January 29th. Well, enough is enough. I cann't wait any longer so I'm going to cancel my order with them and buy them from somewhere else. At least now, I have the opportunity to get a better brand than what MSI is offering.
Originally (before hearing about the Dell sale) I had my sights set on the EVGA e-GeForce 8800GT SSC 512MB, which I am "probably" still going to buy, provided I can find it anywhere. But before I do, I set out to find a speed comparison chart for the 8800GT between the different brands to make sure that EVGA was still on top of the other brands in regards to performance with their version of the 8800GT.
I know I found a link to some speed comparisons between different brands of the 8800GT 512 cards a while back but for the life of me can't seem to find it now.

They should be all the same. Some might use different memory IC's, but it won't affect performance much. Basically, the only difference between brands is the warranty and (sometimes) overclocking headroom.Topher wrote:I know I found a link to some speed comparisons between different brands of the 8800GT 512 cards a while back but for the life of me can't seem to find it now.

You must live way out in the bush kappage! It is sad that Dell didn't anticipate this. It was a great deal, especially for a card that will outperform a card that costs about 2 times as much.
Doesnt LR have some comparisons for the 8800 GT card manufacturers?

Re: The infamous Dell sale for the MSI 8800GT
Well, here's an interesting twist in the story.
Don't ask me why, but I actually waited until today to see if they would ship my two cards since today was the latest ship date they promised. (I'm a sucker for a good deal)
I didn't get any emails confirming shipment, nor did I get a call (like last time) asking my permission to retain the order and accept another delayed ship date.
So I went online to check the status of my order and to my surprise found that the order had been cancled!
I never canceled the order, they didn't ask me if I wanted to cancel the order, nor did they notify me that they were canceling it.
Needless to say, I'm a bit angry over this whole experience and if I can help it, I will NEVER order directly from Dell again.
Something else, My boss at work just recently ordered a custom built PC from Dell and chose the 8800GT card to be included in the build.
He's already received his new PC along with the 8800GT. Now, I haven't confirmed which brand they shipped with his PC but it still ticks me off that they make me wait 2 months then cancel my order behind my back, but are able to custom build a PC with that card and ship it to it's destination in less than two weeks.
I hate Dell, I hate them, hate, hate, hate....

It's not right but they reserve enough to fill their build needs and give that priority over individual sales due to the higher profit from selling a whole system as opposed to an individual piece. Even if it is a different brand they should have offered to make the substitution if you wanted.

That totaly sucks that they simply canceled the order without even contacting you..................
There should be something that you can do about it, file a complaint or something.

Well that sucks. Since they were nice enough to cancel the order for you, did they at least refund the money back to your card quick?

I just wonder if they are sitting on the damned cards waiting on the prices to drop so they don't lose much money on them. They offered these cards at $100 less than the going price at the time. By the time they actually get around to shipping them, their $209 is going to be near the price they SHOULD have been in the first place (based on the advertised MSRP's of these cards right before they came out).

They don't charge the card until the item ships.

Re: The infamous Dell sale for the MSI 8800GT
Yeah, I confirmed that they never charged my credit card.
I do have a ticket opend with their customer service department mainly as a complaint but I'm not expecting any sort of resolution to the issue.
I'm just going to order the cards from somewhere else tonight.

Re: The infamous Dell sale for the MSI 8800GT
Yeah, the same thing happened to a friend of mine. He waited for two months before going out and buying an 8800GT from a quicker shipping retailer. Funny thing is, he got the card shipped from Dell recently so now he's trying to sell it back and recoup his cost (what a pain )
Re: The infamous Dell sale for the MSI 8800GT
He bought a new one and didn't cancel his order? that was some poor planning.

Stick it on ebay...they are still selling for more than what Dell charged.

They just delayed my order again... Pushed it from today all the way out to 2/18/08. Time to start looking elsewhere, I've reached my limit with them.slugbug wrote:I wonder how many people actually did get them

Re: The infamous Dell sale for the MSI 8800GT
Yeah, I went ahead and ordered two of the MSI cards from Allstarshop.com for $250 a piece. I had them in my hands a week later.
Now I'm enjoying some serious Crysis goodness!
