Even the reff cards should be able to do 700/1000 (core/memory) out the box............

I've looked through about a dozen different bios os far and they are all basicly the same except for Vendor ID's and clocks. None have had any voltage tweaks as of yet. Hopefully someone will before to much longer..............

hmm a bios voltage tweak to hit a 1ghz gpu clock that would be nice! :supz:

Here's the voltage tab screen shot from a typical 8800GT bios, everyone I've looked at so far is exactly like this one.

I have just saw that in vigorgaming.com one can customize desktops with the 8800 GT's Xtreme edition, which is overclocked to 660 MHz core clock speed (at least that's what their web page says)

This is kind of hard for me to believe. Is this really true? Does the Xteme Edition of the 8800 GT really has 660 MHz core clock speed? This is higher than the MSI 8800 Ultra's 650 MHz core clock speed! I'm up to buy this on SLI configuration. But I'm worried if this guys at vigorgaming are overclocking this card to death. Also, I don't know it this edition has super fans included to control the temperatures associated to this kind of overclocking. (which must be critical)

What do you say?

the core on my X1650PRO is @ 655 and thats only a 17.5% OC and if i get the drivers & OCing utilities to work properly, should get at least 680, probably more, and at 655 it idles around 43C with stock cooling + AS5 thermal compound

660, heck that's nothing, there's other retail versions out there with the core set to 700.......;) EVGA SSC for one and there's one or to others as well, I just forget all the make and models. And with proper cooling and a good core you can OC to upwards of 800............ :supz:

Holy crap, I'm very new to all this overclocking stuff.
You two really calmed me down with your words.
Like I'm now really going to buy this two 8800 extreme GTs cards.
Now, I'm going to investigate more all this overclocking topic to see how can I enhance my system.

Thanks for your posts.

Hi, hope you don't mind if I jump in here.

You may want to also consider how good 8800 gt's do in SLI (presently not that great), how hot they run and how well your case is ventilated. I returned a 640 MHz XFX 8800GT due to artifacts and freezing up at stock speeds (in well ventilated case) and quite a few others seem to be having similar problems at the higher clocks. If you crank up the fan to keep them cooler they're noisy. You may be better off with a single o/c'd GTS (which has larger fan and exhausts heat out the rear, supposedly coming Tues.). For better o/c and less noise you could use custom coolers such as the Duorb, or possibly different dual slot sized 8800gt 's which come with larger fans & coolers (e.g. Ausus and Galaxy but don't know yet how good they will actually o/c.).

Also, if you want to stay with single slot cards and use Riva Tuner (good for o/c & balancing cooling vs. noise), consider buying the cheaper base models and o/c those - they seem to o/c as high or higher than the pre-o/c'd ones (from what I read) and have less problems. I think you'd probably be better off with a good single o/c'd card than SLI though, SLI can be a pain with setup, bios updates, etc. and you'd need an X38 (or X48) mb to get the full 16x speed for both pcie slots.

The real single board solution (next gen. 9000 series) isn't rumoured until Feb. though.... :|

One persons idea of a well ventilated case may not be the same as anothers, just my opinion.......... 8) Anyway, I've seen some great OC's on these cards already, even on stock air cooling, it all depends on the core its self. When I first got the card I clocked it to 700 on the core with stock air cooling in my well ventilated U2 UFO, so there's good core out there and then there's bad/weak cores out there, as with any OC'ing, its the luck of the draw.................

In the case of my 8800GT, the problem actually was the memory - which had to be underclocked from its rated speed to run w/o artifacts.

I recently bought the XFX PVT88PYDQ4 GeForce 8800GT 512MB 625mhz from Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150259). This past week Newegg discontinued the card and now i'm concerned that i wont be able to find my same card in a few months when i choose to go SLI. I was wondering if anybody knows if i'd be able to buy one of the standard 600mhz 8800gt Alpha dog and SLI it with my current card. With nTune i can even drop this core to 600 so it would match the other card. I've never SLIed before so i don't know much about it...but i do know you need identical cards in order to SLI. The cards are identical except for the cores...which i could change...would they work in SLI?
