Could I get your opinion?

Post by Shut_up_leave »

(I'm pretty tipsy at the moment due to some fun antibiotics, so if what I say doesn't make the greatest of sense I will try to reiterate it)

I've been comparing the (G92) 88000 GTS 512 MB, Radeon HD 3870's (2x), and the new bad boy: 3870 X2 -- I just can't decide what would be the best card(s) for me.

I'll be using a 22" at 1680x1050 and be gaming for most of the week.
Q6600
4g ddr2 ram
x64 XP

Games I will mostly be playing:
TF2/Portal
UT3
Crysis

From what I've been reading over the past few weeks, the G92 really gives outstanding bang for its buck, all the while performing pretty well compared to the 3870 x2. In the Crossfire versus the single X2, I've read that there are some slight toss-ups, but overall it comes down to preference of the pro's and con's versus a single dual gpu card or the crossfire set-up. The price difference isn't really an issue, but I have my doubts that the price gap is really that justified.

In your guys' opinion, what should I be picking up? And if you can be specific, what brand should I be dipping my feet in as well.

(Ps: Already folding under the L.R. tag :partyman:)

how do you get tipsy from antibiotics? You talkin about bein tired lol? Well I'll assume that because you're looking @ two 3870x2 I would say you have a crossfire mobo? If this is the case get a 3870x2, this way you will have room to expand later on when the crossfire x drivers are released. Too bad you missed the microcenter deal ($380 somethin) for 3870x2 , I only saw it on for like two days, but anyway you can probably get one for under 450 if you look hard enough. Well there is a pretty healthy performance increase from the 8800gts 512 to the 3870x2 in most situations is the extra $130ish it to you? Check out the 3870x2 review and see if the extra cash is worth it to you.

I say, choose 3870X2 because it actually works better than the rest at 1680x1050 or higher resolution and it uses only one slot too, so like major said, you can add another one when you want to. Also theoretically, with its 1GB memory, it can save a lot of textures in games like Crysis.

Or, you can wait for Nvidia 9800GX2 and see which is better.
