Black wire goes in com, red wire goes in V Ohm Amp, and switch the dial to the left, erm, 50v should be where it's at.

What does the 'display' look like?

To test the 3.3v rail, you need to put the red connector thing into an orange wire, usually there is only one the 24 mobo connector, so jam the metal bit down into the back of the 24pin thing.

like so:
Image

In the end of a free molex (unplug your DVD drive if you don't have one), red stick goes in the yellow, and the black goes in a black (either one). That gives you 12v. And for 5v, red stick goes in red, and the black goes in a black (either one).

example checking a 12v rail.
Image

You have three 12v rails, so theoretically you should need to find where those three different rails go, and test each one separately, but if you can't then don't worry, as one *should* be enough to check if it's all doing ok.

i STILL havent done the PSU test yet x.x i'm chicken.

but i havent been working on this machine for a week or two. been busy with drama and life.
anyhow i re-set up the rig now that i've had to move my room/personal belongings around and i figured i'd try to fix this FUBAR situation.

still getting that BSOD saying something about memory. testing each stick of RAM individually using Memtest86 v1.70
how long would you say would i want to run each stick to be ABSOLUTELY sure that it's not the problem?

***EDIT**** i tested each stick individually for 6+ hours. they CAN'T be the cause of this, can they???

If their testing clean in memtest86 and rated to run on the voltage that board runs it's probably not the ram itself being bad. Asus and Mushkin do have a quirk that I know about, look up the ram timings and set them manually (assuming you haven't tried that already). Nate tells you how on this post: http://forums.legitreviews.com/about1034.html. Best to try it at stock timings.

Don't trust the error messages, in 25 years of repair they've sent me down a useless path to many times. Given you've passed memory tests, it boots to UBCD and you can run tests it makes it a really puzzling problem. Do you have any compatible spare parts around?

Do you know it's not the windows disk scratched or bad? One thing I've done when it locks on load, and I don't know why this works some times, wait until it locks on the 37 minute screen, let it run a few minutes, eject the disk and reinsert it. Seems to remind XP it was loading and some times it'll go on with the load.

i'm going to try to install XP on a separate HDD now, im sure i have a 20Gb IDE drive laying around... hmmm i'll try that weird pop out trick. if its just a "hit the machine" fix i'm going to go into convulsions :ANAL:

***EDIT*** and no, i have ZERO parts with which to swap out. the ex gf's brother in-law was going to be my hookup since he has a VERY similar rig (same cpu, same chipset on mobo, etc) but thats out of the question now

i did! both tests from WD. there was a short test and a long test and it passed both of them.

this is driving me nuts! this isn't even the issue i was trying to fix in the first place when it just up and shut down in the middle of playing Bioshock.
if anyone wants to give me some more help or do this in a more timely fashion, just click my AIM button and hit me up on there, i'll be signed on all day although it may take me a few minutes to come back seeing how i'll be doing all sorts of stuff today while still trying to get my pc back up and running...

i'm stumped ](*,)

Last possible Idea.

Load your XP disk up and go into the recovery console. From there run the CHKDSK (the checkdisk) command and see if it performs any recovery type things.

If you have the IDE drive, you could hooh it up to the existing cable and slave the DVD, unplug the Cd rom (if i read correctly) clear the cmos and try installing

>.< im mad i didn't think of that... especially considering the IDE cable DOES have another connector on it... thanks darkstar, as soon as i get all my PC cds collected i'll give that a try...

question:

will clearing the CMOS reset my bios version to factory default? cause i just flashed to the latest bios for my board, even though it IS beta

unplugged my Raptor, set up the 20G Quantum Fireball HDD as my master on the IDE ribbon, as the optical drive is already set to slave on the jumper, and i used Gparted to clear the drive and format to NTFS.

loaded up the XP install cd, copied all the files over, and it reboots.
restarts, and i get the same BSOD before.

so its definitely not the HDD or RAM.

time to RMA the motherboard?

If your CPU has passed stress testing on the UBCD and you checked that your PSU isn't to blame (which I doubt).

Then yes.

prepping to test the PSU as i type, how many iterations without errors are good from the UBCD test?

***EDIT*** small but VERY important issue here... my cables leading from the PSU are all black.... what now for the 5v and 12v rails? also when doing the 3.3v rail, is the black prong going into a black section while the red is in orange? i'm figuring that'd be the case but i'm not trying til i know for sure (guessing the black prong needs to be grounded first?)
