Where'd my files go?

Post by w00fd06 »

Ok, my mom recently tried to view some pictures that she had on an 1Gb SD card, and they weren't there, there were no visible files on the drive, yet over 900Mbs of the drive were used, so i tried "Error checking" under properties, tools. That didn't work, i believe it said that some "orphaned files" were truncated by the program, I'm assuming that "error checking" is just chkdsk.exe.

Question 1 - I remember being able to view hidden folders when i first got Vista (like app data in the user folder), could someone tell me how to go about doing that?
Question 2 - Does it sound like these files have any sort of chance of being recovered? I've had issues like this in the past with Removable Drives, and all I did was format the drive and start from scratch.

:x :x :x

Thanks for any help in advance.

Check out http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1521/how ... s_in_vista for how to view hidden folders, hope that fixes it.

1) Click the "Start" button,
2) Goto the "Control Panel",
3) Goto the "Folder Options",
4) Click the "View" tab,
5) Click "Show hidden files and folders",
6) If you want to see system files as well, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)",
7) Done and done.

Thanks guys, I know how to do that now, but those particular files still aren't there. Here's a pic:
1G.JPG
(82.87 KiB) Downloaded 23 times
As you can see, the folder (Pictures 1G) is around 950Mbs, and contains four sub folders, yet there are only three that are visible (if you count the 1 sub folder in "DCIM") and the two three sub folders' size combined is only 7.54Mbs, compared to the 950Mbs of the containing folder (Pictures 1G).

sorry if im making this confusing, i tend to do that, if any further explanation is needed, please say something.

Try running freeundelete on the card and see if it picks up any of the photo's you are after.

If they aren't showing up in a hidden folder, then the card has probably become corrupted somehow.

format the card in your camera if you don't need the pictures.

assuming you want to save the pictures (or at least have the choice)
STOP messing with the card (each time you open/save you are loosing data)
download
PC inspector and run it on the most intense settings (save to a different drive, just in case you need to redo it at differnt settings

I've recover 95 out of 97 pictures off cards that appeared dead, even off cards that have been reformatted.

K, so you can't see the files on your hdd that you copied from the camera, right? Can you hook up the camera via usb and see them that way? Maybe the files/folders just corrupted in the transfer. And are you using any kind of software that came with the camera?

correct, keep in mind, i copied them from an SD Card, not from the on board memory from the camera.

i haven't tried, but i can't see the files from the SD Card, and when i put the SD Card in the camera, it said that no files were found.

no
