I was using AVG Free. Once the "virus" was detected it was cleaned, but it had already altered enough stuff that I wasn't able to get it back. The virus itself was gone, but the wake it left was an ugly one.

ooooo my god what a f*****g nightmare this thing is....

you think it's gone and then it comes back...

currently it appears to be gone, except for the fact my computer takes about 10 minutes to boot up which is surely related to this virus... fun times.

i am starting to see how people really enjoy fighting these sort of things and see it as a passion... because when i eventually defeat this virus i am going to be about as happy as i've ever been.

did the virus attach itself to your Security Center? I kept getting the security shield, with a pop up about downloading the latest version of the software (virus). Even when I went to Control Panel to access Security Center, I would get the virus website trying to launch a browser... but I was disconnected from the internet/network at that point. [-X

I've been battling this virus for the last 2 days. I downloaded malwarebyte on a thumbdrive from my laptop and then downloaded it onto my desktop. I no longer receive any of the pop ups and I can't find the file in add/remove, however, my computer is running EXTREMELY slow and I still can't get online. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to share!!!!!

If you do decide to download malwarebyte make sure that you run the scan in "Safe Mode", if not it might not run the scan?

are you able to boot to safe mode and run the scan from there?

For me, I immediately disconnected from the internet (and local network) to prevent the virus from rebuilding as I removed files/registry keys. After that, the virus seemed to be "dead" aside from the files that were contaminated. The normal course of HiJackThis and AVG scans did nothing to correct the problem I had with the Security Center, but when I would delete any sign of the virus that I could find, it didn't rebuild anywhere else. If you are still connected to the internet, try disconnecting and boot into safe mode.
