lapping blues

Post by stopthekilling77 »

I lapped my Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme this week (pics to come) and I'm left scratching my head as my temperatures went UP.
Since lapping, my stock temperatures under load (Prime95) have risen 4-5°C from 55° to 59-60° ](*,)

I've reset my heatsink already, and I'm completely at a loss here. Is it needing a burn in?
If this is how my stock temps are now, theres no way in hell I'm getting 3.0GHz again.

you lapped a heatsink? why? most are designed to not be flat. the only thing you should really lap is your IHS. was that lapped?

I really hope you lapped it square to the base (so it's not at an angle when you try and mount it) :finga:

Try it with less thermal paste than you are used to, with it being lapped it doesn't need as much as normal.

Because you've made the heatsink slimmer, maybe you need to now apply more mounting pressure?

You can grab a washer and put it in between the scissor mount and heatsink base, like this.

I. Am. Stupid.
I forgot to plug in the case fans... no exhaust whatsoever, so the heat just built up on the heatsink.
Now that I've fixed the situation, I'm seeing an initial 5-6° C drop in overall temperatures (using AS5 vs TX-2 due to my troubleshooting methods)

New thread to come!

lol, I know you wanted your PC to be quiet, but that's taking it a little far :finga:

Sounds like a pretty neat reduction in temps
