Automatic Shut Down

Post by VagueSimplicity »

Okay, so my problem isn't exactly a problem or need, but more of a want. I decided recently (only hours ago actually), that I'd start watching movies on my computer since the monitor is a lot more pristine, takes advantage of widescreen capabilities on my DVDs, and is actually closer to my bed for viewing pleasures than my real TV is (which I guess is better for my eyesight since I don't have to strain my eyes so harshly). Since I mostly watch my movies when I go to bed, I figured I'd need to find a method of turning off my computer while I'm asleep.

Sorry to lay all that story on you, but hey, I hope it was entertaining! Anyway, what I need from ya'll is this (btw, I'm using Vista)...
--A way to automatically shut down my computer at night

So far, I found this for help... http://forums.legitreviews.com/about10472.html

Only I'm guessing the directions are designed for an XP user, as the first difference I noticed was "Scheduled Tasks" is "Task Scheduler" for Vista users. Anyway, I guided myself through a parallel method of this by placing in the "Trigger" tab 5:00 AM for the computer to turn itself off, and the "Action" tab to execute "shutdown.exe". However, on my test runs, all the program would do was in the blink of an eye open one of those black screens with random data, and continue to run the computer as was (nothing screwed up, gladly). I did read something about parameters like "-s", and I really don't know if that's something I need to know how to execute for an "automatic shut down" as I named the task.

Thanks in advance for any solutions or alternative methods! ^_^

the - s does matter what selecting the program to run. also, check the settings to make sure that everything looks good their.

K, thanks. I actually found out that the "-s" had to be inputted into "Add Arguments" on the "Action" tab. Now it's working. I feel kind of dumb I didn't try that in the first place. :P
