Can you recommend a good keyboard

Post by BrianG »

After 4 years of happiness mine is almost dead. It was one of the best keyboards I have ever used. But Logitech doesn't make it anymore. I need to buy a new keyboard.

It needs to work great for gaming, great for typing, and great for everything else. I have looked at the Saitek Eklipse 3, I have looked at a ton of others as well (I even looked at the Logitech that was similar to the one I currently have, and it just wasn't the same), so far the Saitek is at the top of the list. What have you guys used or own that would be perfect for what I need? Is the Saitek any good?

I've used Saitek in the past. I prefer my G-15 over it but the Saitek stuff is definatly well built.

Love my G15, but they've changed it since I got mine.

Ive owned an Eclipse II and their nice keyboards but then I found an IBM Model M from 1993 and fell in love. They do not make them like this anymore, if you want durability and a tactile response that is to this day unequaled then find an old ps/2 Model M mechanical switch keyboard. Typing just feels right on these things, and durability wise? Even though mine was built in 93 every key works perfectly. These things have a thick solid steel back plate in addition to some thick hard plastic they use for the frame and keys. If you want a little LCD and some volume controls and such this isn't for you but if you want a MAJOR geek keyboard that won't ever let you down period then go find an old Model M! :)

Personally I have to agree with HONkUS, the old IBM keyboards were the best IMHO, but progress moves on and schtuff :(

I had a G-15 and its a good keyboard but I did have some issues:

1) I played with the LCD a bit but it never really sank in.
2) I played with the macro keys but never used them.
3) The backlight was cool but the combo of the color and the brightness (or lack thereof) caused them to be washed out by my 24" monitors backlight in relative darkness and in bright light they were also hard to see. I'm getting old and am not a touch typist so that was a ruiner for me.
4) The thing was HUGE! (the newer model is smaller but with fewer macro keys)

I saw a review of the Logitech Illuminated keyboard and the big attractor for me was the backlighting (it is white). It shows up really well in all kinds of light. The feedback took some getting used to (refer to my leading statement in this post ;) ) but there are some things I like:

1) Very slim and light.
2) It has a really elegant look.
3) MUCH smaller than the G15 but still easy to type on after you get used to it.
4) Quiet (unlike the old IBMs).
5) Once you get used to it it feels quite nice.
6) The aforementioned backlighting is very uniform and the keys are easy to read in any lighting scenario. (should've put this first)

That said, keyboards are VERY subjective things and this keyboard isn't "the best" for hardcore gamers OR the best for uber typists, but is a good all around keyboard.
