Are there any old school PC games you just have to dust off every now and then and play no matter how awesome your new rig might be? I have a few that I can't ever seem to get tired of or beat.
Lately a co-workers been going on and on about FireFly and how cool it is/was. That got me to thinking about the old space combat simulator like Privateer, Freelancer, and one of my favorites: Independence War 2.
I love Independence War 2 because it blends the old school fun of Privateer's ship customizing and space piracy with real newtonian physics which makes the game have a wicked steep learning curve. On a modern PC the game is extremely fluid even at 1920x1200 but the cut scene graphics are... well, dated seems to be the word.
Given that the Privateer style game seems to have died in favor of the FPS this is about the only game that I'm really aware of that's like it. I'd heard good things about Taychon: The Fringe and I love Bruce Cambell but I've not been able to find a copy. Anyone played I-War 2 or Tachyon?

I-War 2 was awesome, Tachyon I didn't like so much I could never put my finger on it.
I loved the Descent and FreeSpace series though, I still play FreeSpace 1/2 through the Source Code project, the community has made some serious upgrades to the meshes, textures and engine it looks like a new game: http://scp.indiegames.us/
I also loved and still love Rebel Assault II, Jedi Knight, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Falcon 4.0, Jane's ATF, Homeworld, Quake II this weekend I just re-discovered Black & White lol.

I still play the original Doom like it's born yesterday...Actually I downloaded something called "ZDoom" ...just put the original wads in there and viola..main difference is it runs like it's in direct X or something(very smooth, more so than the original) and you get mouse control along with looking up and down and jumping, can change resolution(it's still pixelated but its alot cleaner)..It made Doom as fresh as any other shooter in a way...The other one is the original Aliens vs Predator.

I've played through both Fallout games like a dozen times each and every time I play I still find something new. It's a shame Interplay didn't focus on their RPG properties. It might have kept them in business longer. But then I'd never get to play Fallout 3. Hmm, there's a catch 22.
I wish EA would do something with the Origin properties. Wing Commander could be redone. Strike Commander could be expanded. And don't even get me started on Ultima. But no, can't release a new game ever year so they have to make the same sports games every year.](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)
