AMD Shows Off Their 65nm Processor Progress

Post by Apoptosis »

AMD AND IBM UNVEIL NEW, HIGHER PERFORMANCE, MORE POWER EFFICIENT 65nm PROCESS TECHNOLOGIES AT GATHERING OF INDUSTRY'S TOP R&D FIRMS

-Achievements Can Help Both Companies Meet Aggressive Goals for Increasing Performance, While Decreasing Power Requirements, of Future Microprocessors-
WASHINGTON, D.C.-Dec. 6, 2005-In papers presented at the International
Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in Washington, D.C., IBM (NYSE: IBM) and
AMD (NYSE: AMD) today detailed their progress in bringing new, advanced
semiconductor process technologies and materials to the 65 nanometer
(nm) technology generation.

The companies announced that they have successfully combined embedded
Silicon Germanium (e-SiGe) with Dual Stress Liner (DSL) and Stress
Memorization technology (SMT) on Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) wafers,
resulting in a 40 percent increase in transistor performance compared to
similar chips produced without stress technology, while controlling
power consumption and heat dissipation. The new process technologies
reduce interconnect delay through the use of lower dielectric constant
(lower-K) insulators, which can improve overall product performance and
lower power consumption. In addition, the new technologies have shown
ability to be manufactured at the 65nm generation and scaleable for use
in future generations.

"Our joint work on developing advanced process technologies continues to
ensure we can create and provide the highest performance, lowest power
processors on the market," said Nick Kepler, vice president of logic
technology development at AMD. "Yet again, we can add another
achievement to our list of successes that demonstrate how shared
expertise and skills can result in overcoming roadblocks and creating
more valuable innovations for customers."

"At IBM, we strongly believe that our unique joint development
partnership with AMD at East Fishkill, N.Y. is key to overcoming power
and heat challenges as the industry reaches near atomic scales," said
Gary Patton, vice president, technology development at IBM's
Semiconductor Research and Development Center. "The successful
integration of leadership technologies from IBM, AMD and our partners at
65nm demonstrates the strength of our collaborative innovation model."

Additional details about third generation strain technology innovations
from AMD and IBM will be disclosed at the 2005 IEEE International
Electron Devices Meeting, December 5-7, 2005 in Washington, D.C. This
technology was developed as part of the AMD and IBM joint development
alliance at AMD's fabrication facilities in Dresden, Germany, and at the
IBM Semiconductor Research and Development Center in East Fishkill, N.Y.

IBM and power efficient in the same sentence? Well, I'm not holding my breath.

Though, I suppose AMD's involvement makes it more believable. :P

I just hope higher performance this time around doesn't mean they're going to clock the chips so high and run so hot they'll require watercooling like the G5.

Yeah it will be a while....I suspect they both have some more learning and alot more tweaking to do.......
AMD will/are upgrading older FABS to accomadate newer 65nm and below Tech and manufacturing equipment.......(haven't a clue where they currently stand there)
Intel have had 65nm plants ready for a while....infact are in production in small amounts......Just up the road from me in Leixlip (dublin) they have a FAB(s) ready......

After IBM and AMD perfect this, they can then ramp up production.....The good thing is that we all know AMD are more efficient than Intel (get more work done per MHz not how much heat!) IBM are super efficient when it comes to making cpu's (again forget heat/power loss). This should mean the next-generation (unseen) chips from AMD will be 8)
In other words....NOT NETBURST!

Intel finally are getting competition when it comes to R&D

(sorry i tend to go-on when it comes to these topics, just call me "king geek" lol)

nah Intel is already shipping 65nm and is working on the next gen CPU's. Don't forget 2006 will mark the death of netburst (where Intel went wrong for many). The AMD/Intel battle will be a close on in 2006 i have a feeling. What I want to know right now is what Yonah is going to be clocked at We know they have gotten them to around 2-2.2GHz, but I'd love to see some at 2.5-3.0GHz.

I doubt they will scale much higher than 2.4GHz for the dual core
Aren't desktop cpu's speed binned every 200MHz, Not sure for mobile chips, but aroung ~100MHz sound right......
If current Yonah chips do upto 2.2GHz, then Intel can release 4 different speed grades from 2GHz upto 2.4Ghz....This also doesn't include budget versions and ULV versions (although ULV versions are to be single core?)
I've read they will release a single core Yonah? -> for the blade server market too, that might goto 2.6GHz

So far no-one has mentioned the REAL TDP for Yonah!!!! Sure Intel claims it's lower power, but when running over 2.4GHz???

I know you have/had your hands on @ least 1......I also understand NDA's etc. LOL

What I'd love to see is someone like AOpen to release a new mobo with support for Yonah....the Idea of OC'ing a dual core Pentium M with nice cooling......

Will Intel be releasing a DTR chip for laptops? Or will Yonah take that role too?

45nm process will be needed.....

Intel own mobile chips and will do for '06
AMD own dual core and single core in desktop cpu's and should still do in '06 -> mayby Intel have something up their sleeves?

With regard to the announcment that IBM and AMD are joining forces of sorts....Can only be good for technology in general.....even if they invent some magic way of making more effecient cpu's and corner each of their markets, Intel will just liscence it from them, and hopefully vice versa (look @ SSE etc.)

Netburst = RIP (P4 was the best cpu I ever had, Thank you Intel ;)

I'd say no. I think they are betting on Yonah taking over. I haven't seen any mobile Prescotts, lol

Conroe! I'm excited for the Conroe architecture as it will be ditching NetBurst and adopting more of a "Dothan-type" archicture (as in it is much more efficient). It's just too bad it took Intel this long to figure that out :axe:

I tell ya what... for the longest time, I've been wanting an AMD X2 4400+ processor-based system... But as more time goes on, I've been feeling the whitebox lappy market calling me....

Well, the more I think about it, I feel like Yonah may be the best of both worlds with dual-core performance and mobility. The icing on the cake would be EM64T support... Either I can't remember, or I never knew, but does anyone know if Yonah is going to support EM64T (64-bit) at launch, or is that not actually going to show up until later in 2006?

afaik no, it will not. Im waiting for dualcore, 64bit and virtuilzation to hit the laptop market. Then i may really start thinking about moving everything to mobile... naw, i get to much gaming performance for much cheaper on my desktop :)

Sounds like you are waiting for the dual-core version of AMD's Turion coming sometime in '06... This is basically what I'm waiting on too, but I can live without virtualization if yonah is not going to support it.... I was just hoping that yonah will be 64-bit from launch... If it doesn't, then I may be waiting too... I think it will be worth it to wait for dual-core and 64-bit on a lappy.

Why not do both!!!
There is no real need for a hi-spec laptop if you have a pc aswell.
I'm going to buy/build a laptop for portability first and foremost, a 1.4GHz ULV cpu, 40GB HDD, DVD and 512MB. That's all I need....mayby an x300 GFX card.
Unless you don't need oodles of HDD space, hi-end GFX etc. then go mobile....I could never give up my pc...I have roughly 1.4TB in my Linux box, and 470GB in my main pc.....
For me, I can get a laptop and have access to all that storage via wifi.......

Graphics are not really an issue anymore when comparing laptops to desktops. and with an updated turion and yonah coming in the next few months, you have the performance of a desktop in a laptop.

Then like you said, you can have access to all the storage you want via wifi... so I would prefer to have a powerful, portable laptop, and my 2.6C PC will be more than enough for a storage server.

my point is that starting next year, I think laptops will be at a point where there is very little disadvantage to going mobile... the only disadvantage is the hard drive limitation. But even at that, if you go mobile, then you become part of the market for external, hot-swap, firewire hard drives... so that can alieviate storage issues while on the road. (Ok, I'll stop rambling now).

Yup, but to me, it's not the same, with high-end GFX you don't want to be looking down @ the monitor screen all the time, you need to plug in your monitor, keyboard and mouse, ie. sit down where your pc was/is for comfort. Sure you say protability AND gaming, but to me a lower end card will do fine. I can't see myself getting that envolved in my gaming when sitting on a bus or plane. I can get a lower spec laptop, watch DVD's for hrs, or game. AND have a powerhouse of a pc. Would you feel comfortable with encoding hours and hours of HD content on your laptop, or Folding 24/7 with it? (on both cores) -> try that with a 2.6GHz P4, it takes ages!...

Yup again. I think we both just have opposite views about the same thing (in my case I have 2 pc's), but yeah it's great to now have real power and portability. I just think a laptop should be light and have great battery power. (that means no second battery!)

I accept your point though. ;)

Some of the questions you raise we won't know the answer to until the reviews hit the net for the new turion and yonah processors. However, my hunch is yes, I would feel comfortable encoding HD content on a turion or yonah-based laptop while it is plugged in. Obviously when unplugged you will not want to do that with a laptop.

I see your points, too, and agree 100% when referring to laptops available today. That's why I don't have one now... they don't have what I need (or want) yet.

I just feel like the next mobile processors/platforms from AMD and Intel will open more doors for those wishing they could have the power of a desktop in a mobile solution.

BTW... thanks for sharing your viewpoint! :)
