Disassembling a Z71V for painting

Post by Zjonni »

Has anybody taken apart the monitor/top??? I can probably do an 'okay' paint on it by sliding masking paper under the frame so it covers the screen, but if it can be disassembled without ungluing and the other insanity I have seen in some notebook monitors, that'd be a Good Thing.

Thanks,

i personally have not, but know it can be down because Voodoo removes the top of the ASUS Z71 for painting. I hope you have a digital camera becuase I am dying to see what some readers paint jobs look like. Are you going to use automotive car paint?

Yup, I've got a camera, and I intend to use it. :)

And yup, I've seen the Voodoos. It's just, well, there's a difference between 'possible' and 'plausible'. I've disassembled some notebook monitors where it was a matter of a half-dozen screws and off come the panels.

Others I have seen are nightmares of glue and specialized industrial adhesive tape that is NOT meant to be peeled off the (surprisingly fragile in some ways) LCD display. Anything you can put together you can take apart, with the right application of tools and force. The question is...Can you put it back together when you're done?

Voodoo's repainting means it probably isn't TOO awful. But then again, it might mean 'Yeah, it's awful but the factory sends them to us unpacked and we have the right adhesives and equipment here.'

Found what I need:

Z71forums

Now if I could just get the heat down! I took some Arctic Silver Alumina Ceramic paste to my GPU and CPU after cleaning off the old pads with Arctic Silver cleaner.

Well, the CPU temp has dropped 5 degrees on average...And the GPU hit 115 within five minutes of starting WoW at which time I terminated the experiment. This with both fans set on 100%. GPU temp sank down to 86-86 within a minute.

Clearly I must do something about the damnable gap between my GPU and the aluminum heat sink. I'm sure it isnt even making contact. Yesterday with the (what is that stuff, wax or something?) tape, my GPU was pushing 100 after about five-ten minutes. Today...Grrrr!

I guess it is time to break out the copper shim stock.
