P4 Celeron IHS "removal"

This was to be dedicated to Vstrom.....who has recently lost a close Friend ;)

Well as some of you already know, I'm going to remove the IHS from my X2.

I decided to practice on an old Celeron first.......

The Lab Rat.....
Celery 2.4GHz --> can do 3.6 with .1v extra vcore

Well it took AGES to cut into it, I went slowly, then used Dental Floss to finish off with.....Everything went great......I couldn't believe how easy it was! BUT the Darn IHS still wouldn't come off..... So Vstrom suggested using a hairdryer incase the TIM was set hard.....That didn't help!!!

SOOO......I gave up and used a tweasers to pry it off..........

Yes! that's the IHS on the right.....WITH THE CORE STUCK TO IT!!!

I have a 1.7GHz celery somewhere......I'll try again when I find it....(If I find it LOL)

my guess is intel used thermal apoxy rather than just some thermal goop

I'm glad I could be such a role model!

I totally overlooked the fact that you were using an Intel chip...I have head many stories about them using epoxy - he is right. At least it wasn't your new one!

I guess I won't practice on the 1.7 chip either.....

Well, I have my expert board....well will have it 2moro...When I rebuild the system, I'll try it on the X2......here's hoping......
(knowing my luck, I'll kill it....great way to end a year off......but good reading ;) )

We should start a "dead cpu cemetery" thread LOL

LOL. I feel pretty sure you'll do fine on the AMD. I'm still cracking up. I so expected to see a successfull result I was floored when I saw you yanked the core off! It's not funny 'cos I felt like dog crap after botching mine but between the wording and the pic it just cracked me up. Maybe I have post IHS removal screw-up syndrome.

Yeah, it did...I didn't want to use the blade @ all, but it was needed to get going.....I found if you tie the floss to a pen on each end, I could hold the floss taught and move the cpu along it instead of move the floss...if that makes sence....

I was finished in about 40mins....the next 2hrs was wondering how the IHS was still stuck on LOL

Ahh well, Live and learn.....

Hopefully any members thinking of this, knows that it may not work with Intel and lapping the IHS might be a better idea!

i was gonna say when i saw the thread title

"you might not want to do that, as P4's have the core soldered onto the IHS"

but i guess its too late for that

rofl, and it wouldn't be too soon, cuz my K6-2 should be dead by then and I can post some pics of me mutilating a dead processor, rofl (yeah I have that necrophilia thing, but only towards all things silicone, except implants, lmfao

that's funny. it's the other way around with me: I don't like any implants (nor anything artificial) but have no problem with silicone used in processors

I got my new Expert board today

I'm just doing a first boot now!
I'll post some benchies and general feelings when I get time....It's 2am here and I just spent the last hour cutting hose and adding another 120m radiator.....my temps went upto 45C since I added the 7800 to the loop....
