folding with an x2...

Post by grunt »

Tinkering around with the new x2 Im using along with 2 others Im building. Not that it matters but its the 4400+. How can I optimize the folding? Can I isolate a core by using the "affinity" setting?

Yes. I haven't figured out how to run 2 instances but you can do that too :)

I found setting affinity is useless.....using one or two cores to fold.....

I actually found my PPD go from ~230 to over 400pts by using only 1.....

I use the console version....I place it in a folder called "folding" on the c:\ drive.....wehn I run it, via dos, I use the -config command....enter team No. / username etc. It then asks if I want it to run as a service...choose yes...then after reboot it's always running in the backround... 8)

(you can pause/stop/start the service by: goto start/run -> type "services.msc" -> then D-click the FAH service)

First I download the standard client which runs in the taskbar -> setup as per the norm....I then place a shortcut to it in the startup folder....

Then I download the console version.....

Here is a screenshot of me setting up FAH as a service.....this is required if you want to run 2 instances easily!
Notice the command @ the top -> "FAH504-Console.exe -config"
(you only need to type the first part, then press TAB ;) )

Image

Notice...Question number 3 is to run it as a service?
Just choose yes!
You also need to choose yes, when asked for advanced options....
When asked for a machine ID....choose 2 --> It's not required to do this anymore with latest versions of FAH, but better to be safe...we don't want your precious points going to someone else now do we ;)

Then after reboot, 1 instance is running in the backround....

Ohh forgot to mention....I use the BETA console version 8)

I hope this clears some things up.....
Even running it as a service with 1 cpu core is cool as you never have to worry about it!

NP

If your pc crashes when gaming (it can sometimes when folding)

You can start/stop/pause the service

Goto start / run / type "services.msc" / D-click on the FAH service
If the "startup type" is set to automatic (default setting) it will always run @ startup 8)

Weird. When I run 2 instances on my main rig it freezes up after a few minutes even though I am 15 hours prime stable on both small FFT's and Large FFT's.

Try deleting to contents of the "work" directory, it could be just a corrupt WU

You need to copy the Console version (beta) to a folder on the C:\ drive

I put in a folder called "Folding"

I then open DOS -> start / run / type "cmd"
then in dos I type "cd \"-> press enter --> this gets you into the C:\ drive
Then type "cd folding"-> press enter --> this will get you inside the folding folder

then type "FAH504-Console.exe -config" -> press enter

See above screenshot for more

hope this helps!

Nope!

It runs with "idle" priority.....
It can "sometimes" crash your pc when gaming.....(the game will crash to desktop) -> If this happens, just close FAH B4 gaming.......

I'm experiencing lock-ups with two instances of FAH running on my X2...... ](*,)

So far I've found setting each instance to use 75% CPU usage is helping.....

Vstrom....can you try editting the client.cfg file with notepad, edit the "cpuusage=100" to "cpuusage=75".....for each client.cfg file....?

Even if we can get 2 cores @ 70%.....it's better than just 1 @ 100%.....

anyone else having prob with their X2/Opty, can you try this too pls....
the more people the better, as i want this to be uber stable, since the pc will be on 24/7.

thanx
