Here's my list of absolute MUST HAVES in the FPS catagory along with a description of the game and why I like it:
1.)Battlefield 2 and Expansions - Battlefield 2 combines the intense action and thrill of FPS gaming while adding vehicles, squads, commanders, and huge maps that can support up to 32v32 person combat. There are several types of gameplay and its always hard to predict which side will win. Put that with great graphics and different soldier classes and you've got one addicting game!
2.)Counter-Strike:Source/HL2 - Counter-Strike:Source takes a huge leap forward from where the 1.6 version left off adding some of the best graphics I've seen with the same great gameplay on revamped maps that look incredible. The gameplay never gets old and there are more and more custom maps that are slowly making their way into mainstream server map rotations. Combine that with hi-def custom weapon skins and models and it will really get your heart going.
3.)Red Orchestra:Ostfront 41-45 - This is a new game that was recently released through steam based in the times of World War II from the Russian point of view. Graphically the game is great as well as the gameplay. Its got a CS:S feel to it but with the vehicles(which are EXTREMELY detailed down to seeing the controls and parts inside the tank when you change positions)you really experience what a WWII-based FPS game should be like.
4.)The Specialists - Even though a version hasn't been released on the source engine yet, The Specialists is still so much fun to play. Graphically TS is much better looking than Counter-Strike but the best part by far would have to be the immense selection of weapons which include everything like knives you can stab with AND throw, katanas, 7+ pistols, 6 different shotguns, 8 or 9 SMG's, 6 or 7 rifles, and the specialty weapons like the Sawed-Off shotgun, Barrett sniper rifle(clip-loading sniper rifle similar to the awp only semi-auto), and some other interesting options. The choice of weapons is set by the speed you want to move(i.e. the more/heavier weapons you use the slower you run and the less you can do. Combine tons of weapons with matrix-like options including Kung-Fu, Bullet Time, Running up walls and diving, and put it all online and I dare you to not have fun! To be honest I'm dying to play the source version of this if its ever released.
5.)Day of Defeat:Source - Just like CS:S, this is the version of DoD on the source engine with all the maps revamped to look realistic, rag doll physics, and just like all the source versions.....amazing graphics. The thing that really amused me about DoD:S is the fact that on the Axis(German) team you have a shovel instead of a knife. I don't know about you but I personally get a huge kick out of "shoveling" somebody who didn't see it coming.
6.)Call of Duty 2 - CoD2 was a great update to the original version with better graphics, better gameplay and even more things to do. Its a great looking game but I personally never got into the whole feel of the game and lost interest in it after awhile.
These are just my personal choices but I've always been an FPS gamer and have played most of the games out there so I feel like I've got a little bit of experience in this area
