Suse 10.1 Wireless Card Problems

Post by Azygous420 »

Need help with installing a wireless driver for my WDA-2320 D-link network card on Suse 10.1. I've looked but can't find a wireless driver that came with the OS. Any help would be great.

Yeah ndiswrapper can be installed via YAST.
Copy the windows driver to your hdd, the open a terminal screen and type "su" then enter your ROOT password.
Then "CD" to the directory you have stored the windows driver (you need the .inf file and the .sys file(s))
Type "ndiswrapper -i {enter name of .inf file here}
Then type "ndiswrapper -m"
Then "ndiswrapper -l" to check if the driver/module is installed

this is taken from opensuse.org
# Start YaST's network configuration: Network Devices → Network Card
# Choose: "User controlled with Network Manager" and then "Next"
# Choose: "Add" button in lower half
# Choose:

* Device Type: "Wireless"
* Configuration Name: "0" (or whatever :))
* Hardware Configuration Name: "static-0"
* Module Name: "ndiswrapper"
* Options: "" (keep empty)
* Do not select "PCMCIA" nor "USB"
* ... and finally "Next"

# On next screen select DHCP in "Hostname and Name Server" and in "Advanced → DHCP Options", then click "Next"
# In "Wireless Network Card Configuration"-window choose (= keep the defaults):

* Operation Mode: "Managed"
* Network Name (ESSID): "" (keep empty)
* Authentication Mode: "Open"
* Input Type: "Passphrase"
* Encryption Key: "" (keep empty)
* .. . and finally "Next"

Between Azygous420 and I we both tried to run yast and use the driver. we got it to try to installt he driver thenit said something about an error in line 135 of the driver. so it won't work, any other ideas about that? that was using ndiswrapper to use the windows driver. we tried both the win9x and win2kxp driver. neither worked they both had the same error. and we followed the walkthrough to the t.

goto yast, then install software, select search and search for "wireless"

There's a package there for wifi drivers/modules. install that (I can't remember the name sorry)

That D-Link card is based on the Atheros chipset, which has Linux support!

Failing that, install "madwifi" I don't know if Suse has inbuilt support for it, but you be able to get an .RPM for it over on the packman site. or via google.

well I downloaded 10.2 and still no luck, then had a friend come over and found out that the reason the mad wifi driver wasn't working was because of the fact that we didn't have the 'Kernal Source' Installed from the 10.1/10.2 cd. So after that happened, the dlink card showed right up and we no longer have an issue.

Nice one!
Leave SuSe on the HDD for a while..........it tends to grow on you and you'll learn to love it ;)

My brother did love it, that's why he has it lol. Just thought I'd post up how our friend fixed it for him since he never did.
