E6600 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3

Post by KnightRid »

Didnt know if this should be in the cpu or motherboard forum, so please move if it should be in the other :)

Why oh why cant I get my E6600 above 3.2ghz? If i try to set the multiplier to 9X in the bios, the machine seems to go through a fit and resets the fsb to 266! It does the same thing if I have it at 8X and try to do 450mhz, or really anything above 400mhz.

Temps are rigth around 40C, so I have room to play yet.

I also still have to set the Voltage up above 1.4 to even get to 3.2ghz...maybe a motherboard problem since my 6300 I had to do the same thing, but the 6300 got to 3.2ghz also!

I dont know if the cpu has a lock thingy on it? maybe the motherboard is just not good? cpu is not up to par? I do think I should be able to hit 3.4-3.6ghz EASILY with this.

I have now set the voltages to auto, and it works the same as if I do them manually. i have NOT set the voltages above 1.45, since i really would hate to run the computer 24/7 with voltages above that ( or am I paranoid ).

Any help is appreciated.

Mike

OH and CoreTemp shows it running at 450mhz X 8 = 3600mhz, which is wrong, bios is at 8X X 400mhz.

Tat shows correct, and has a Maximum Frequensy of 3599mhz - what is that about?

Have you updated to the latest bios? Also try resetting the bios, and or try the RAM in different slots. Is the CPU making good contact with the heatsink?
Make sure you disable Speedstep, C1E etc. aswell.
Try booting with 425FSb and increase the MCH voltage a bit more.

I wouldn't go above 1.425v for 24/7 use, unless you have good cooling.

Yep latest bios other than the beta they have out - I dont like doing beta bios :| .

Hell i ALWAYS had to increase the voltage to at LEAST 1.425 jsut to get to 3.2ghz! With the 6300, 6400 ( or was it 6420 - something like that ), and this 6600. I think it is the motherboard :( I must have gotten a good but not great one.

Everything is disabled that i could see :) virtualization and all that crap

I guess I am destined to be at 3.2ghz. damnit.

Tried 425, but it jsut rebooted itself and reset the fsb from manual to automatic! bastard..lol

Mike

I might try some crazy voltages to see if it will actually run at 425mhz or more, but i doubt it will be very stable.

LOL - I only have the E6600, the rest went for builds :)

I was SOOO close to going water cooling, but then the wife saw the price..lol. Seems for anything that will cool better than air, you relaly have to shell out some dough. If you want something to cool as good as this Artic 7 Freezer Pro taht i have, then you can get the cheaper ones :( I want it to cool better of course.

Using Bios F10 i have the same issue, i dont know if ths a rev 3.3 thing or not. but anything near 3.6 wont boot for me, it will post but not boot. The core temp your seeing is normal. Core temp uses your normal mult of x9 but will show what your BIOS is at. i have had mine running at 8x400 and core temp orthos show me running at 3600 i have had it show me at 7x575.5 before as well. so its just an odd error, nothing bad, trust what TAT and CPUz shows they are correct as far as correct current speed and FSB and Multi go. I find my self sitting at 9x350 for the best Oc with my E6600 and ds3 board. Seems the snapiest 8x400 seems to have a slight delay. i hope my garbage helps :axe:
