Intel IHS Lapping and Removal For LGA775 CPU's
If you've maxed out your processor by overclocking and want to squeeze more out of it or are just looking to reduce core temperatures lapping the processor might be something worth looking into. Legit Reviews does some lapping and eventually removes the IHS on our Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 processor to show you what to do and not to do when it comes to messing with the IHS on your processor.
After the CPU was cleaned we used four layers of electrical tape on each side of the core to prevent cracking the die and removed the load plate off our abit AW9D-MAX motherboard so the water block would make contact with the core and not the load plate. We applied Arctic Silver Lumiere to the core and after a test fitting to make sure the water block made contact with the die we fired up the test system. The system would power on, but sadly it wouldn't post.

lol... I can't believe you actually tried to remove the IHS! To bad it didn't work out... seems like you did what you had to in order to get the IHS off, but you probably melted something in the core at the same time.
Is there any liquid solution that will dissolve just solder??

There is, but it also desolves PCB's AFAIK. I don't know what it's called but I found it the other day via google......when Nate was asking about removing the last of the solder from the core.
I remember when I was trying to get the IHs of my Celeron.........Dang, Intel puts alot of solder on there............but in my case it was different than Apops.............I knew the chip was going to die

How would you get the liquid solution under the IHS and onto the core? Not to mention the fact that none of the liquid would be able to touch the bottom of the CPU. You have to heat it up... The solder melts at 80-90C and the core won't melt till 120C or so I've been told. Tring to remove the IHS on an LGA775 processor isn't easy to do by any means.

I didn't know... it was just the first thing that came to mind when trying to think of an alternative to using a blow-torch.

Ouch dude, this is the method for most successful IHS removal, you needed to have hung the CPU in the air like shown, and it would have dropped off when it was ready, instead of exploding!

I am curious to know how you found out the IHS was not flat. It is my understanding that an IHS, while outside of a socket, is not flat because in the socket it is "bent" flat by the retention plate. So if you flatten it out of the socket, haven't you made it worse? Also, if it is only out of flat by 3 or 4 mils, how are you measuring that it is flat after the sanding? I am thinking that a person with sandpaper cannot "feel" 3 or 4 mils of difference in a surface.

i never knew you could do this. maybe you could keep slicing with the razor but i've never done this kind of stuff before.

no you can't because the heat sink is soldered to the core... that is why you have to heat it as it melts the metal and it pops off.
