Recommended CPU cooler (not water)

Post by CMcguire »

I don't think i'm ready to take the plunge (get it water... plunge... i'm hi-larious) into water cooling.. so i was wondering what Air CPU coolers would you recommend for a q6600? I'm using a scythe ninja rev b at moment and while it works it really doesn't have any room for overclocking (i.e. 70C under load with stock speeds).. and i would like to maybe get up to about 3ghz on it at some point.

people on this site seem to like zalman 9700 or 9500. I have the 9500 and it works ok for a q6700. I fold 24/7 on smp client so my cores get really hot so I have to turn the fan on high. If you don't fold all the time the zalman will work just fine at low and quiet speeds.

For oc I would go under water.

There was a thread in the general computer forum not to long ago, bio linked to a air cooler round up. There is a fair amount of info there.

on sale for $22

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro - E6600 overclocked to 3.2ghz, rarely ever hits 42C!!!

Dont see why you should have to spend a fortune for air cooling when this thing is just awesome!

Mike

It is big - on the Gigabyte P965-DS3 Rev 3.3 it actually covers some of the chipset heatsink, but still fits great. I dont need a fan on the chipset with how cool it runs anway, so no big deal.

Personally I'd get the U120x, but its up to you.

Anandtech has the U120x beating everything else, and the main difference they did to the 25 cooler mega showdown Hexus had up, is that they don't use the stock thermal paste. So might give a more accurate run down of cooler performances (negating variances in application of TIM).

What fan would you go with on the 120 extreme?
I'd say you'd need around a 2000rpm fan.. though i know its the cfm thats more important

Does anyone know if there are some upcoming heatsinks etc.. that it might be worth waiting for not in that much of a rush.

I recently got an Asus StarIce and it lowers my temps from about 65-70 Degrees C at 100% cpu load to about 45-50 at max, its a pretty cool cooler (no pun intended) it even looks cool. Especially when i got it from a sale for $30 Au$.

But you need to make sure you have the space.
