HP Recovery software?

Post by camaroguy1998 »

Has anyone ever used HP's recovery software?
My mother has asked me to fix her computer and its just just running extremely slow!
Example, FF takes 10secs to open! All rpograms are slow to open and respond.
I've turned off a bunch of programs that were starting up at boot and it helped a little but not much.
It's XP Home, probably 4 yrs old or so.

So my thought is to reload windows but it doesnt come with a disc it has a Recovery program loaded on the HDD as a 2nd partition. Has anyone used this? Are there any things I should look out for? I'm hoping someone can give me a couple pointers before I dive into this!

Thanks ahead of time for any help! I hate going into something like this blind.

The wipe is pretty simple, step by step instructions etc. Though it does restore it to factory state, so you will lose everything that you don't back up to another media. The worst bit is that you go back to having whatever crud the manufacturer put on it originally.

You sure that the PC isn't just really badly fragmented?

Same as Dan said, real simple step by step.

There should also be a utility to make backup cds or dvds. I know my Compaq (HP) came with it. You can only make discs ONCE, so dont lose them after you burn them ;)

Mike

Also you will get all of the crapware installed again just like when you bought it...argh.

I have defragged and cleaned it up as much as possible and its still SLOW!

Ok, the system did not have a burner under the original config but, I have added a DVD burner!
Should I consider putting the original drive back in after I back up what items she would like to keep?
Or do you think it will detect the new hardware during the recovery process and load it properly?

You don't happen to know the name of the utility that makes the backup CD's?

Sorry if I ask a cpl stupid questions, I dont have the computer here in front of me and I'm trying to get some questions answered before I make the hour trip to take care of this. Also when I get there, there is no other computer to get online and ask stupid questions!

Think on HP's site there is a program to kick start the re-install but not to make the disks.

You have to go back to HP and buy the disks, think they are 10-15 bucks + shipping. I had to go through all this on a friends folks machine couple months back. The program easy to use as long as its still in the programs list, if not then down load it and go that route.

Now if you are like my buddy and formated it before he brought it to me then you have to order the disks, its the only way to reinstall and have all the programs they got when the bought the computer.

:( I tried buying the discs and HP says they dont carry them any more! The system is more than 4yrs old! :(
The computer is still on the original config! So, I'm hoping the disc creation utility is still there!
Like I said though the system did not come with a burner so I hope the utility was there in the first place!
Thats why I asked if someone knew the utility name! I can call and ask if that program is there or see if I can DL it from HP!
I guess its time to see if HP still has that utility available!

When you are at the laptop you can go to - http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/sup ... ay=support

have it search the computer for the model, and see what options it has.

If you have the model you can also type it in and it will give you specific instructions on how to do it for that laptop.

Mike

drive shouldnt matter as long as the OS has the driver for it built in.

Do you know the model number? I'll dig though my stuff to see if I still have a copy of the utility.

It's not a Laptop it is a Desktop, Model, HP Pavilion 502N.
Off the top of my head its a 1.2G Celeron and now has 512MB RAM, other than that pretty basic!

If you have a copy of the utility that would be great! :)

Take a look at this...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene ... e=bph07145

Looks like if the software is not there you turn it on and hit F10 (repeatedly) until the recovery console comes up.

In case the link don't work..

Code: Select all

Recovering from Windows XP
Use the following steps to recover the computer from the Windows XP desktop:

   1.
Backup files from the My Documents folder and from other folders you may have created.
   2.
Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.
   3.
From the Windows XP desktop, click Start, All Programs, and then one of the following options:
NOTE: The following options are for HP computers. Compaq computers will have similar options (for example, Compaq Tools).
          *
HP Tools, and then HP PC System Recovery.
          *
Hewlett-Packard, hp pavilion pc tools, and hp pc system recovery.
          *
PC Help & Tools, and then HP PC System Recovery.
      A recovery Welcome screen appears.
   4.
Click Yes or OK to continue the recovery process.
The computer restarts to the recovery program. If another welcome screen is displayed, click OK to continue.
   5.
Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:
          *
To perform a system recovery, click Next, and then click Yes
          *
To perform a destructive recovery, click Advanced, (select Destructive Recovery) and then click Next.
CAUTION: A destructive recovery will format the hard drive. This will delete all the information on the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP and the original software that came with the computer.
   6.
Read and respond to each window and screen that appears.
   7.
After the System Recovery is complete, the computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens and wait until the PC finishes the setup.
NOTE: It may take a long time to complete Windows setup. This time varies and may take over several hours. Recovery times are most affected by using recovery discs that were ordered from HP and/or the amount of files that were stored in the user account folders (for example, My Documents and the Desktop).
   8.
Before using your computer, update and protect your computer. For more information, refer to Things To Do After Performing a System Recovery in Windows XP .
   9. Re-install applications that you added after puchasing the computer, and any files that you have backed up.

Recovering during startup
Use the following steps to perform a recovery from the hard drive:

   3.
      Turn on the computer.
   4.
Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears.
   5.
Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:
          *
To perform a standard system recovery, click Next, and then click Yes.
Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
NOTE: It may take a long time to complete Windows setup. This time varies and may take over several hours, depending on the amount of files that were stored in the user account folders (for example, My Documents and the Desktop).
   8.
Before using your computer, update and protect your computer. For more information, refer to Things To Do After Performing a System Recovery in Windows XP .
   9. Reinstall applications that you added after purchasing the PC, and any files you need from backup.

Found this too, so if you have a burner might want to take it with you just in case you can so this...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... e=bph07143

Code: Select all

To create the recovery disc set, Click Start, All Programs, PC Help & Tools (or similar), open HP or Compaq's Recovery CD-DVD Creation software, and follow the on-screen directions.
If you cannot create recovery discs or your discs have become damaged, continue to the next step.

I finally got my hands on Mom's computer!
Unfortunately the option to make backup CD's/DVD's is not there. :(
But I used the recovery software and it was pretty straight forward as you guys said!
Much to my surprise it offered me the option to do a FULL recovery or do a Repair and save all Mom's files!
Of course I chose the Repair. This fixed alot of the problems but not all.
The one thing it did not fix was a Hard Freeze problem. A couple hours after the Recovery was done it Locked up on me again. I figured out why. A couple months ago I added another stick of RAM so I figured that was the best place to start and I was right!
I pulled the RAM out and its been running ever since, almost 2 days now!
I have been able to run ChkDsk, Defrag and Windows Update without any issues! :)

Thanx Guys! =D>

So, if the CD/DVD burner is still working, I would HIGHLY recommend making a copy of the restore partition ASAP.

WHY? Well, my son's HP-Compaq V3000Z laptop had a HDD problem. The restore partition was totally useless since it was a bad image. However, I opted to get the recovery CD's for $19 from HP when we bought the machine. It saved our behinds on that problem.

So, if you can make a bootable copy of the HP restore/recovery partition. Don't put it off at all knowing that this machine has already had a close call of totally slowing to a crawl.

A four year old machine isn't a bad machine actually. It may not be dual core or anything extreme, but for daily tasks it does the job well.

i know this is old, but i was having a similar issue and came across this thread.
regarding making a bootable cd: if you can't you might still be able to get discs from HP.
i had hp tell me discs were no longer available, but then i found them on their website. they apologized for the confusion. their parts website isn't fully connected to their support website/phone support. give the website a try, give your model number and see what comes up. would be nice to have those cds just in case
