Steam Problem

Post by vicaphit »

A friend and I were trying to play some old Garry's Mod together over the weekend and ran into an error with connecting to IPs.

He would create a game, and I would right click on his name and join game. This gave us an error that said "server is not responding". So he found his IP address with www.cmyip.com, and I used the console to connect that way. Though he did not have the 5 digits at the end of the IP. (EX 101.25.59.155:27015) Is that last part of the IP crucial when connecting to an internet game via the console in steam? When I tried to connect that way the connection failed after 4 restarts.

Any ideas?

The last 5 digits are the port the game is running on.

If it's not specififed as anything different in the setup/connecting of the server, it'd default to running/looking on that port anyway.

If he's behind a firewall, the 27015 port might have needed to be opened (and forwarded to his LAN address).

So, finding out the port number is crucial?

I think more the port forwarding is the important bit (provided it didn't automatically register itself with the firewall).

It should all default to that port if you haven't changed anything, so it's pretty easy to find out ;)

I used to run servers a while back.

I'm pretty sure it always uses 27015. But there might be a small range for servers so have him google it.

Get him to open those ports. On my router at home I just went to "Virtual Servers" and it had a list of games which Half-Life was on, so was pretty easy. It is the only router I worked with so I dunno how others do it.

Also, make sure he types in the console, "sv_lan 0" just incase :) (no quotes of course)

That's what I saw usually. I did see some with 27025 when I just looked though

I will have him figure out how to allow that port on his router. He is making a machinima and I would like to help out.
