Gas Prices due to Katrina.

Just read what I said about big cars above. I'm sure most of you will agree.

Nate, I'm sure glad WI has some type of gouging law. They can raise the price as high as they want, but they can only do it once in a 24 hour period. Looks like MO doesn't have any type of law for price increases.

Also, referring to Louisana and Mississippi. I have a friend who lives in LA and got to speak with him tonight. He is at his aunts house far away from the wreckage. He lives in Slidell and his city was wiped off the map.

Anyway, he mentioned that he nearly got killed by a HUGE pine tree. He said the thing must have been like six feet in diameter and was totally uprooted by the force of the storm. It was like that all along the highway to his house... uprooted trees. He also mentioned that gas prices there are INSANE. He saw some guy filling six 55 gallon drums with gas. The prices for regular there are $6 - $12 per gallon. People were lined up like crazy even at that $12/gallon station...


I hate that I have to put Premium in my car, but that's the price I pay for having my toy. I'm not risking putting mid-grade in my car... I'll spend a few extra cents and put what I need. I gotta drive about 30 miles (round trip) each day to school. Also have to drive 8 miles (round trip again) to work damn near every day too. This school year is going to cost me a **** load to go to school. I even have a worthless class on Fridays that's 2 hours long and everything is pretty much done online.

I was watching the news and there was a lady stealing cloths and shoes. they asked her if she felt bad for stealing. she replied "no, need cloths and shoes. cant walk outta here wit out shoes." its going to get worse before it gets better. just wait a couple days when folks start getting hungry.

A guy I work with is a volunteer fireman. he has been getting emails for requests for help for the body clean up crews.

Stuff just doesn't move fast when there's no roads to drive on........... And everyone wants help now, there's only so many people passing out the food and supplies. Kind of hard to bring in supplies when you can't get there.

Logistics is the biggest problems of the whole operation, most if not all the local personal and supplies were damaged by the storm and outside resources had to be brought in from northern areas, that also takes time. Then you have to setup a base of operations so that the rescue workers and aid people don't become victums also, that takes more time.
If it were a normal type of storm, aid and releif workers from the local area would have been on site with aid within 24 hours, but due to the massive size and power of the storm, it just wasn't possible.

I do have a question of the people of other countries out there, just where is the help from your countries? We fly people all over the world and give aid when anything happens, but when something happens in our country, everyone turns their back. We are people to and in need of help so what's the deal?

Ireland gives more per person in aid and to charity than ANY other country in the world!!

I agree that other large countries should offer to send people, indeed i'm sure they are sending aid.. but as you said logistics is an issue..

I just saw on the news that a few countries have offered aid to the US in it's time of dire need. Only took them 3 days after the fact to get around to it. And they bitched about us being slow to react when it took us over 24 hours to start suppling aid to the Tsunami victims.

American car engines are too big.. Over here the average engine size is about 1.4L, America - 2L!
We both do the same thing (single person driving to local store and back), american cars use ALOT more fuel..

Hybrid cars are the way to go..

man, I'm gonna be feeling the pinch tomorrow afternoon, when I have to go fill up my Suburban with its 35-40 gallon tank. Gas here in Spartanburg, SC went up 64 cents in one day, from 2.45 a gallon Wednesday to 3.09 a gallon today. I only get about 10 mpg myself, but I can't afford to get another car right now because I'm unemployed and jobs (though government job analysts down here say the unemployment rate is going down significantly) are becoming very scarce, almost like the new jobs that came in are being absorbed by those who have been unemployed for awhile. This country is going to hell in a handbasket quick. Where's my DUI bike

Gas prices were around 1.40-1.50 before Bush took office. They were at 2.40 and now this hurricane is just another reason to blame a sharp increase in costs. When shipping of oil goes back to normal, the prices are still going to be around 2.60-2.70 minimum.

Bush has done nothing for the oil situation but allowed for the oil cartel to make more profits than ever before.

It's funny how their profit increases at the rate that gas prices increase.

I feel you on that one!! it does make me wonder sometimes if most of the US is now seeing "red" (republican reference, lol); all I know is that oil companies are lining their filthy, gluttonous pockets while we're nearing a fuel crisis equivalent to what happened back in '71-'72 (wasn't around for that, but my stepdad filled me in, and it was bad!). What a**holes.....

Wow, I get "only" (*does conversion away from normal figures*) about 35 mpg in my parents' car, and about 30 in my truck, which I don't drive unless I need to actually use it for the truck ability, and I've been only considering vehicles which get better mileage than the car to buy for myself.

lol I force my car into best mpg- I avoid using my a/c and open windows, and I usually switch to neutral behind lights instead of staying on drive- not sure if that really helps or not but it puts less strain on the engine
