some little questions...
Hi, I want to upgrade my computer to the next level, i am hoping on getting this computer (everything bought by parts)
-P4 840 3.2 Ghz dual core.
-Abit fatality AA8XE.
-2 X 1024 DDR2 at 533 Mhz.
-NVIDIA 7800 GT 256MB DDR3.
-Ultra X-connect 500 watts.
-250 Gig SATA Maxtor 16 Mb hard drive.
this is the computer I have now.
-AMD athlon 2700+
-1 GB DDR 333 hrz.
-ATI radeon 9600 SE
-60 gig western digital hard drive.
-Motherboard gigabyte RZ 2004.
The questions are...
-AMD or P4? I can get a P4 840 3.2 Ghz for the same price as a AMD 4200+ / 2.2 GhZ X2 . Any suggestions?
-A NVIDIA 7800GT or an ATI X1800XL???
THKS...

I made the leap from 2.4 P4 to an AMD 3500+ Venice Core and will never go back. My AMD processor runs smooth and cool and where my old P4 would hang up on certain software the AMD doesn't even blink. I'm sold on AMD and until Intel proves me otherwise my next processor will have the AMD logo on it as well.

honestly right now if your wanting to upgrade the X2 is the only chip i would suggest for a desktop. the 3800+ offers a great value and performance as does the Opteron 165 and 170. Paired up with a quick Hitachi, or WD Raptor drive, and 2GB of fast memory and you have a great all around system. Throw in a 7800GT for $250 or a 1800XL for abit more and you have a killer gaming system as well.

ok,ive been searching on socket 939 motherboards:
- DFI Lanparty UT NF4 SLI-DR NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard
-Asus A8N SLI Premium NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard
-ABIT AN8 32X NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard
Ive noticed any of this motherboards supports no more than DDR 400 Mhz. (unlike the abit fatality suports DDR2 for socket 775) Are all motherboards for AMD only uses DDR memory?
Any suggestion on motherboards? i usually shop on tigerdirect.

The board only officially supports DDR400....there is no official standard for ANY ddr1 ram above ddr400!
You can use DDR500 etc. ram, by default if will run @ ddr400 speeds.....but when overclocking, getting ddr500 etc. allows for more headroom
Rev.E (i think) AMD CPU's unofficially supports DDR500 ram...
There's also the MSI K8N Diamond Plus, nForce4 SLI X16 board.....Although having the SLI X16 chipset(s) doesn't bring much more performance than the "standard" nForce 4 SLI chip...

Has the ultra PSU gotten any better? I like the look of a modular psu but I don't think that one is suited to the task of providing stable power to those power hungry rigs your looking at. This beast looks interesting, but I know there are more out there (pc&c
)

A quality 500W is more than enough for most PC's in most cases
Intel is also good, but I presume your into gaming, AMD is a better gaming CPU technically......but your GFX card determins the speed in most cases!
If your going with AMD and s939 then 2GB is the way to go......G.Skill have some very good ddr500 ram, they don't cost too much and give very good performance.....Most if not all people can overclock them to 270MHz (ddr540) and some get higher
http://www.gskill.com/f1-4000usu2-2gbhz.htm
They cost me 240euro
There is also some other sticks whick are also good....it depends if your going to overclock or have the $$$
If your going to wait for AMD's new socket to come out, then you'll want to get 2GB of DDR2 800 sticks
For Intel Mushkin have some great new DDR2

I've never used ddr2 so I can't really suggest what's best......
