Installing Catalyst 7.2 on Windows XP. WTF?!!!

Post by InsolenceAndHeresy »

I downloaded the Windows XP version of AT- I mean AMD Catalyst 7.2. When I tried to install it, I passed the EULA and the Express/Custom part, and then it had the little growing bar thing with "ATI Display Setup is preparing to...". And then it had a error labeled "Severe: Setup will only run in administrator mode. Setup is aborting". I'm pretty sure my one and only account is an administrator because I've had no problems installing anything with it for the past year. What the hell?

just for kicks, you could try making another account, giving it admin privileges, and installing on that. If you get the same error then I don't know :(

I tried catalyst 7.2 and didn't have any admin problems but it didn't find a driver for my card in it lol. So who knows maybe they'll release a better versions in a bit.

I had some trouble with the ATI driver packages in the past also. Things were hosed because I was trying to install the control center package but didn't realize I needed to install Microsoft's .NET. Who reads the fine print? :P

I believe they host a driver removal tool to clean up old drivers. Maybe just add/remove progies like this suggests:

Then try the new driver install again if logging in as Administrator didn't work.

What if I uninstall the drivers using DriverCleaner Pro and it still doesn't install? Then I'd be uberscrewed since I dont have the install files for 7.1 anymore D=
