computer restarting when I touch the case.

I originally posted this in the intel motherboard forum but I dont think its related to the motherboard.

I have a D975XBX2 in a lian li a10b case and ocasionally when I touch the case the computer restarts. I thought it was the mother board but I thought I would try testing out the power reset buttons first. This is what I did. I turned the computer on then touched the side and the computer restarted I then unplugged the power and reset switch from the computer wile it was still running. I then tried touching the computer to get it to restart, nothing. I then plugged the power and reset switch back in and as soon as i put the side panel on the computer restarted. This makes me think that static electricity might be traveling through the case to the switch. Does that make any sense? What can I do about it?

Im going to try and insulate the motherboard from the case buy adding rubber washers to the standoffs. Should I put these on both sides of the motherboard or just the top ? Does the motherboard need to be grounded to the case?

sounds to me it maybe some sort of grounding issue.

I just realized I have power going to the Auxiliary PCI Express Graphics Power Connector. on the Mother board. My only pci card is the graphics card. Could this be causing a problem?

Have you checked to make sure there are no spare connectors from the PSU touching the case where they souldn't be and that there are no objects between the mobo and case, i.e. a random screw that is causing a short.

try the mobo outside of the case and see if you still experience the same problem. If not, then just carefully put the jmobo back and check and make sure tha tyour screw is not too big and the stands are not touching other parts.

as it has been already mentioned check the stand offs and make sure none of the power supply wires are shorting out on the case.

^^^ You could also check every connector being used and make sure its sitted completely.. gl

It's either this or there is a bare wire touching.

Check the house ground at the plug where the computer is attached, a bad or poor ground will cause that problem. Also if you live in a single family home, check that the main house ground is still good as well.

Check if your motherboard isn't screwed to hard to the motherboard tray.
Sometimes if you screw in your mobo to hard the board will bend and touch the case.
Usualy when this happens it causes your motherboard to be grounded.
2 symptoms of this is what you just mentionned or your board will just not boot.
I would try before removing your motherboard to unscrew your motherboard a little and see if it still is doing that.
I am pretty sure this is whats happening here.

After checking everything mentioned here I decided to try and change the cord on my power supply. I had used the cord from my previous computer and thought maybe that had something to do with it. After changing the cord I didnt seem to have the problem with the computer resatarting anymore and the picture on my monitor seemed to get better. Is it possible that there was a problem with the old cord?

Yup, if the cord had a bad ground wire it could very easily caused the problem.
