not sure whats going on with my processor...
ok so a couple years ago i bought a compaq r3000 laptop with an amd athlon 64 processor, a few months ago it was having some problems so i had geeksquad ship it off to get it fixed. i get it back a month later, i check the system specs and says it has an amd sempron processor, obviously a downgrade and noticeably slower. couple weeks ago i take it back for them to replace it with the original and they tell me it has an amd athlon but that its just telling me i have a sempron and that my windows xp might be corrupted? so is there like a driver i need to install or something? because i know its not just a problem with what its telling me, the performance is alot worse than what i was experiencing with the original athlon 64. so whats the problem here? any sort of input is appreciated, thanks.
Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
Sounds like they screwed up or are just doing a CYA on ya....but...why the hell would you take something to the Peek Squad to start with???

yea i dont know, figured they just messed up and could replace it with the correct processor.
Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
Ouch. Download CPU-Z just to make sure the processor is really a Sempron.
Then find your receipt, get the original system specs and argue with them.

Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
i ran the cpu-z and its telling me the processor name is in fact an amd athlon 64 3000+ but says the specification is an amd sempron processor 3200+? not sure what the difference is, but why would it say in my system specs (when i go to control panel -> performance -> system) that i have a sempron? i know for a fact it said athlon before.
Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
How much cache does it show in CPU-Z? The Sempron has 2x 128k I think and the Athlon is 2x 512k.
Or might as well post a screenshot

Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
alright, i posted a couple attachments and heres what it looks like. any other screens ive seen posted by other people, their processor name and specification were the same, except the specification would say the speed as well. on mine its like two different processors, or so it seems to me.

Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
Well, looks like the Athlon, not sure why the specs say Sempron, maybe someone out there with extensive CPU-Z experience can say?

Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
I have seen this before and in the case I'm referring to the cpu was actually a sempron. The processor was a sempron 2800+. CPU-Z thought it was an AMD Athlon XP running at nearly 2ghz. So, the "name" was incorrect and the "specification" was correctly listed as, AMD Sempron(tm) 2800+.
I don't have time to research it now, but I will check and post my findings later.

Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
No Sempron has 512KB L2 cache so you have an Athlon 64. I don't know why it's showing up like that except maybe it's an error with the program. If you download Everest Ultimate that program has a built in CPUID program.
Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
or a long shot possibility is, that you have sempron clocked to make the computer think its still a A64(eg. i have an XP 2800, and depending on how i have it OCed, sometimes it(CPUz) says its a XP 3000+, XP 3200+ or just XP @ 2250MHz) or it really is an A64(very likely) and the specs said it was a sempron because it is OCed(mabie) and that speed is classified as sempron. hope i helped a little

Re: not sure whats going on with my processor...
It has 512 cache so it's an Athlon.
Also (from Xbit Labs): "According to AMD’s recent roadmap, the Oakville core is designed for Mobile Athlon 64 processors."
No idea why the specification says it's a Sempr0n.
