Which CPU?

should i buy a q6600 or an e6600 ( i will be overclocking and i want maximum performance) i know right now dual cores use less power and perform better (because they can oc more) than quads, in most games , but is it worth it to shell out the extra cash in order to gain some future proofing ( i have a kinda of crappy after market cooler and i really don't want to spend 80bucks on another air cooler for my q6600) i am hoping to oc to around 3GHz

For the max overclocking potential, with the least heat output, go for the E6600 over the Q6600, besides what do you do on a regular basis that needs super threading on all four cores.

well for some reason(ive tried countless tweaks ect, my board refuses to go above 373fsb so im kind of limited in how much i can oc.. do you think a q6600 could make it to 3GHz with my cooler?

If I'm not mistaken the stock multiplier for a q6600 is 9x, so you'll need to hit 333, to get to 3,0ghz, that's a 67mhz OC. I think it should make it. Temps might be close to the high side, but you should be fine with adequate case cooling

If I had to make a decision today, I would be deciding between the E6750 and the Q6600. The E6600 would not even enter the equation.

I agree with Dicecca, temps would be on the high side. How many case fans do you have?

i have two 80mm case fans (on the top/bot of the case) and two 120mm on the side/rear, and my mobo doesnt support the newer series so im stuck with either e6600 or q6600

this is off topic, but whenever you guys have time do you think you could make a review of quad core cpus, something showing if newer games are using them and if they are becoming beneficial in gaming?all the reviews out on the q6600 were done when it first came out and i would love to see how it performs today compared to when it first came out

1. You already have a dual core Core 2 Duo. So the "speed" upgrade you are looking for in the E6600 will be minimal. Chances are you won't even notice it. That is unless you do a lot of video editing/encoding.

2. Your motherboard does support the latest Intel CPUs (i.e. E6750). That is assuming the board you will be using is the same one in your sig. According to ASUS' website there was a BIOS update for the P5W DH on 11/23/07 that adds more CPU support (the site says you need 2104 but the latest one dated is 2406 so I would assume they have been supported for a while now).

3. If you live near a Fry's keep an eye out, I've seen them run a Q6600 and ECS motherboard combo for $199. I know that the motherboard is junk and I'm not recommending you use it but that is still a good price on that CPU.

4. Now we're back to the question at hand... a dual core or a quad core? Well I don't know of any game that takes advantage of a quad core CPU. I do know a bunch of video editing/encoding programs will use a quad core to it's full potential. If you upgrade once a year I'd say just get a dual core and get a quad core next upgrade. If you upgrade like me, every 2-3 years, then I'd get the quad core.

go with the quad. i just recently upgraded from a p4 laptop to a quad core desktop with 4 gigs or ram, and the differnce was unimaginable. if you get a quad core, you can burn a dvd while your playing a game, and have folding running in the backround no problem

well as i said before my mobo seems to be able to only go up to 373fsb so an e6600 @ 373 will provide (i think) a solid boost from an e6300 @ 373 3.3GHz vs 2.66GHz

does anyone know if there will be a price drop anytime soon? (soon as in up to Mid-late January)

Did you check out the overclocking tweak/fix guide i linked to in your other thread?

It might be able to help you get more performance out of your current E6300.

Day to day windows won't feel any faster with the quad over the e6600 but you will be able to do more things at once (like fold), and if you do do any video editing or other multi threaded apps you will notice the improvement in those.

I would say try the E6750 with a BIOS update. The board you use IS the one in your sig right? If you run an OC around 3.5 gigs you should be fine for about 2 years. The quad core IS only a hundred bucks more though with only slightly less OC potential... I would say flip a coin and go with what ole Washington says.

so with a bios update i can use cpus that use 1333fsb? even though its rated @ 1066?, well after 3h of suffering trying to get my comp to work i managed to boot into vista with stock settings, it would only boot into xp @ 330fsb and i had to bump mem voltages to 2.4 to even log into vista(then the blue screen would come up about 10sec later anyways) ...should i just sell my mobo for like 140 and get a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R ?

okay well now it only boots into vista with a max of 315fsb.. and it boots into xp with 330, okay this has kinda of switched over from a cpu forum to a mobo one but.. ive come across some more cash so i think i can afford a higher end mobo, im thinking either Asus Maximus Formula SE(269) or Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 (284)
